ICU Veterinary Nurse I

Position Summary

Provides patient care for ill and injured animals in the Veterinary Medical Center. This position supports the Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care unit, instructs and demonstrates techniques to students, assists veterinary technicians and veterinarians, and maintains supplies and cleanliness.

Skills Developed and Utilized

• Emergency triage
• Patient stabilization
• Nursing care
• Knowledge of setup and assisting with emergency procedures

Minimum Requirements

• Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years of college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology
• Six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug-dosing, and sterilization
• Experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software
• Licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment

Desired Qualifications

• Experience in an educational setting
• Background in emergency medicine

Summary of Physical Demands

• Lifting and carrying animals up to 50 pounds individually, or 150 pounds as a team

Summary of Health Risks

• TB risk or potential exposure to animal or specimens with Mycobacterium bovis
• Work with animals or unfixed animal tissue
• Wear a respirator (does not include paper dust mask worn for comfort)
