About the role

This part-time ICU Veterinary Assistant position supports the Small Animal Emergency Medicine Unit of the Veterinary Medical Center. The successful candidate will assist with animal patient care, monitor vital signs, manage IV fluids, and maintain ward cleanliness and supplies.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor animal patients’ temperature, pulse, and respiration
  • Oversee IV fluid administration and monitor equipment such as IV fluid pumps, EKG, pulse oximeter, and Doppler blood pressure
  • Walk animals outside and clean ward areas
  • Stock supplies and process lab samples and medication orders
  • Enter charges into the hospital information system
  • Assist clinicians, veterinary technicians, and clinical students with animal patients
  • Handle animal restraint for blood collection, IV catheter placement, and X-ray positioning

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent
  • Six months to one year of related work experience in a veterinary practice
  • Experience maintaining accurate records, typing, and basic computer skills

Qualifications

  • Experience with general handling of cats and dogs
  • Knowledge of animal restraint techniques for blood collection and IV catheter placement
  • Familiarity with monitoring equipment (e.g., IV fluid pumps, EKG, pulse oximeter, Doppler blood pressure)

Physical Demands

  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs individually or up to 150 lbs as part of a team

Health Risks

  • Potential exposure to animals or specimens with Mycobacterium bovis
  • Work with animals or unfixed animal tissue
  • Required to wear a respirator (not a paper dust mask for comfort)

This position will fill 10 vacancies. Shifts are available across all hours.
