About the role
This part-time position supports the Small Animal Emergency Medicine Unit of the Veterinary Medical Center by assisting with animal patient care, ward maintenance, and clinical operations.
Responsibilities
- Monitor animal patients’ temperature, pulse, and respiration
- Monitor IV fluid administration
- Walk animals outside
- Clean ward areas and stock supplies
- Process lab samples and medication orders
- Enter charges in the hospital information system
- Assist clinicians, veterinary technicians, and clinical students with animal patients
Requirements
- High school education or equivalent
- Six months to one year of related work experience in a veterinary practice
- Experience maintaining accurate records, typing, and basic computer skills
Qualifications
- Experience with general handling of cats and dogs
- Knowledge of animal restraint for blood collection and IV catheter placement
- Experience positioning animals for X-rays and IV fluid monitoring
- Previous exposure to monitoring equipment such as IV fluid pumps, EKG, pulse oximeter, and Doppler blood pressure
Physical Demands
- Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs individually or up to 150 lbs as a team
Health Risks
- Potential exposure to animals or specimens with Mycobacterium bovis
- Work with animals or unfixed animal tissue
- Required to wear a respirator (does not include paper dust masks worn for comfort)
