About the role

This part-time position supports the Small Animal Emergency Medicine Unit of the Veterinary Medical Center by assisting with animal patient care, ward maintenance, and clinical operations.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor animal patients’ temperature, pulse, and respiration
  • Monitor IV fluid administration
  • Walk animals outside
  • Clean ward areas and stock supplies
  • Process lab samples and medication orders
  • Enter charges in the hospital information system
  • Assist clinicians, veterinary technicians, and clinical students with animal patients

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent
  • Six months to one year of related work experience in a veterinary practice
  • Experience maintaining accurate records, typing, and basic computer skills

Qualifications

  • Experience with general handling of cats and dogs
  • Knowledge of animal restraint for blood collection and IV catheter placement
  • Experience positioning animals for X-rays and IV fluid monitoring
  • Previous exposure to monitoring equipment such as IV fluid pumps, EKG, pulse oximeter, and Doppler blood pressure

Physical Demands

  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs individually or up to 150 lbs as a team

Health Risks

  • Potential exposure to animals or specimens with Mycobacterium bovis
  • Work with animals or unfixed animal tissue
  • Required to wear a respirator (does not include paper dust masks worn for comfort)
