Starting pay rate is $20.39 per hour. Employees may be promoted to a Construction Technician II position at a rate of $23.454 per hour upon acquiring the necessary certifications and demonstration of skills.

Pay

  • Base rate: $20.39/hour
  • Promotion to Construction Technician II: $23.454/hour
  • CDL pay differential: $1/hour after 1 year of continuous service, an additional $1/hour after 3 years, and another $1/hour after 5 years (for those who hold a CDL and perform CDL functions regularly)

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspection duties on highway construction projects, including preliminary surveying, construction surveying, and ROW staking
  • Sample and test construction materials
  • Document contractor’s daily work related to highway construction
  • Learn to read and interpret construction and bridge plans
  • Obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 90 days of hire through the in-house training program
  • Operate snow removal equipment and perform snow removal activities as needed
  • Work varying hours outdoors on highway construction projects, including nights, evenings, and weekends based on the contractor's schedule
  • Perform survey duties and/or materials testing as required
  • Report to work outside scheduled hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions and be placed in an “on call” status
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire (costs for the permit are covered by the department)
  • This position may require overnight travel
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required

Qualifications

Highway Construction Technician I

  • No prior experience required beyond the minimum qualifications

Highway Construction Technician II

  • Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections
  • OR coursework or training in construction surveying, materials testing, or inspections practices, and in using associated instruments and equipment
  • Must have passed the NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an Associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or a related field (may substitute for NDOT courses)
  • Must possess a valid CDL

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry
  • Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment
  • Computer experience, including word processing, spreadsheets, SiteManager, GEOPAK, and MicroStation software
