About the role

Starting pay rate of $20.390 per hour. Employees may be promoted to a Construction Technician II position at a rate of $23.454 per hour upon acquiring the necessary certifications and demonstration of skills.
Exciting added pay differentials: in this classification, those who hold a CDL and are utilized to perform CDL functions on a regular basis shall receive a pay differential of $1/hour after 1 year of continuous service, an additional $1/hour after 3 years of continuous service, and an additional $1/hour after 5 years of continuous service.
Responsibilities
- Perform inspection duties on highway construction projects, including sampling and testing of construction materials, documentation of the contractor’s daily work, and surveying activities related to highway construction.
- Learn mathematical skills needed to read and interpret construction and bridge plans effectively.
- Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 90 days of hire through NDOT’s in-house CDL training program.
- Operate snow removal equipment and perform snow removal activities as needed.
- Work varying hours outdoors on highway construction projects, including nights, evenings, and weekends, based on the contractor’s schedule.
- Document construction-related activities indoors using computer record-keeping software.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum age of 18 with a valid driver’s license.
- Highway Construction Technician I: no prior experience required.
- Highway Construction Technician II: experience in construction-related activities such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections; OR coursework/training in construction surveying, materials testing, or inspection practices.
- Must obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire (costs covered by NDOT).
- Must be able to report to work outside scheduled hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions.
- Regular and reliable attendance is required.
- This position may require overnight travel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry.
- Experience operating heavy equipment or snow removal equipment.
- Proficiency with computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, SiteManager, GEOPAK, and MicroStation.
- Passed NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan Reading courses, or an Associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or a related field (required for promotion to Technician II).
Skills
- Knowledge of: standards and specifications for construction projects; instruments, equipment, and materials used in surveying, testing, and inspection; construction and plant inspection phases; surveying and testing techniques.
- Skill in: mathematical computations involving trigonometry and geometry; construction inspection, surveying, and materials testing techniques; using personal computers, drafting, spreadsheet, and word processing software; operating technical engineering equipment.
- Ability to: interact with coworkers, contractors, consultants, and the public; prepare technical reports and maintain detailed records; lift equipment and samples up to 100 pounds; communicate effectively in person, by telephone, radio, and email; interpret and apply engineering plans and specifications; plan, schedule, and lead work; work with minimal supervision and high integrity; adapt to new technology and processes; work safely and demonstrate safe practices; resolve conflicts and make sound decisions.

Pay
$20.390 per hour (Technician I). Promotion to Technician II at $23.454 per hour upon certification and skill demonstration. CDL pay differentials: $1/hour after 1 year, additional $1/hour after 3 years, and additional $1/hour after 5 years of continuous service.
Schedule
