About the role

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) seeks a dedicated and hardworking team player to enhance the quality of life for Nebraskans by building and maintaining a convenient, safe, and innovative statewide transportation system.

Responsibilities

  • Field inspection of heavy highway construction projects
  • Materials testing on concrete, asphalt, soils, and other materials
  • Verify contractors' work is completed in accordance with project plans and specifications
  • Read and interpret plans, contracts, and specifications
  • Record and maintain accurate documentation of quantities installed by the contractor
  • Utilize computers and various programs daily
  • Perform various survey tasks, utilizing rods, levels, tape measures, and GPS equipment
  • Work both as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision
  • Assist with snow removal on highways and operate snowplows during winter weather events
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Highway Construction Technician I: At least 18 years old, valid driver's license
  • Highway Construction Technician II: Experience in construction work, coursework/training in surveying, materials testing, or inspections, valid CDL, experience in heavy equipment/snow removal, computer experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry
  • Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment
  • Computer experience including work processing, spreadsheets, SiteManager, GEOPAK, and MicroStation software

Pay

$20.39 per hour. Employees may be promoted to a Highway Construction Technician II position at a rate of $23.454 per hour upon acquiring the necessary certifications and demonstration of skills. Exciting Added Pay Differentials! In This Classification, Those Who Hold a CDL And Are Utilized To Perform CDL Functions On a Regular Basis Shall Receive a Pay Differential Of $1/hour after 1 year of continuous service, an additional $1/hour after 3 years of continuous service, an additional $1/hour after 5 years of continuous service.

Schedule

Regular and reliable attendance is required. To qualify for the Highway Construction Technician II classification, applicants must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Costs to obtain the permit will be paid by the department. In order to be hired at the Highway Construction Technician II level, applicants must have passed the NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an Associate’s degree in civil engineering technology, or a related field which may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT courses. Upon hire, you will be provided with the required training material. This is a self-paced training and once completed provides for promotion to the Highway Construction Tech II level. Typically, this is accomplished within the first 6 months of employment.

Skills

  • Knowledge of standards and specifications used for various types of projects
  • Knowledge of instruments, equipment, and material used in surveying, testing, and inspection work
  • Knowledge of all phases of construction and plant inspection and their relationship to each other
  • Knowledge of surveying and testing techniques
  • Knowledge of construction procedures in agency construction manuals and directives

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of mathematical computations involving trigonometry and geometry
  • Ability to apply complex construction inspection, surveying, and materials testing techniques
  • Ability to use personal computers/laptops and associated applications and software, including drafting, spreadsheet, and word processing software
  • Ability to use technical engineering equipment and instruments during assigned projects
  • Ability to interact with coworkers, contractors, consultants, and the public to maintain cooperative work relationships
  • Ability to prepare technical reports and maintain detailed records
  • Ability to maintain surveying, testing, and inspection instruments and equipment
  • Ability to lift equipment and samples weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to communicate with others in-person, and by telephone, radio, and email
  • Ability to interpret and apply engineering plans and specifications
  • Ability to plan, schedule, and lead the work of coworkers during assigned projects

Other

  • Must be able to climb, bend, stoop, walk long distances and work long hours, possibly weekends, in outdoor temperature extremes
  • Must be able to report to work within 45 minutes of notifications under normal conditions
