Employees may be promoted to a Construction Technician II position at a rate of $23.454 per hour upon acquiring the necessary certifications and demonstration of skills.

Exciting Added Pay Differentials! In this classification, those who hold a CDL and are utilized to perform CDL functions on a regular basis shall receive a pay differential of:

• $1/hour after 1 year of continuous service
• an additional $1/hour after 3 years of continuous service
• an additional $1/hour after 5 years of continuous service

Responsibilities

• Perform inspection duties on highway construction projects, including sampling and testing of construction materials, documentation of the contractor's daily work, and surveying activities related to highway construction
• Learn mathematical skills needed to read and interpret construction and bridge plans effectively
• Obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program
• Operate snow removal equipment and perform snow removal activities as needed
• Work varying hours outdoors on highway construction projects, including nights, evenings, and weekends, based on the contractor's schedule
• Document construction-related activities using computer record-keeping software in an office setting
• Report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

• At least 18 years of age
• Valid driver’s license
• Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire (costs for the permit will be paid by the department)
• Regular and reliable attendance
• Ability to lift equipment and samples weighing up to 100 pounds
• This position may require overnight travel

Qualifications

Highway Construction Technician I

• Minimum: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license

Highway Construction Technician II

• Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections
• OR coursework or training in construction surveying, materials testing, or inspections practices, and in using associated instruments and equipment
• Must have passed the NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an Associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or a related field (may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT courses)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry
• Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment
• Computer experience including word processing, spreadsheets, SiteManager, GEOPAK, and MicroStation software

Skills

Knowledge of:

• Standards and specifications used for various types of projects
• Instruments, equipment, and material used in surveying, testing, and inspection work
• All phases of construction and plant inspection and their relationship to each other
• Surveying and testing techniques

Skill in:

• Calculating mathematical computations involving trigonometry and geometry
• Applying complex construction inspection, surveying, and materials testing techniques
• Using personal computers/laptops and associated applications software including drafting, spreadsheet, and word processing software
• Using technical engineering equipment and instruments used during assigned projects

Ability to:

• Interact with coworkers, contractors, consultants, and the public to maintain cooperative work relationships
• Prepare technical reports and maintain detailed records
• Maintain surveying, testing, and inspection instruments and equipment
• Communicate with others in person, and by telephone, radio, and email
