About the role
Knife River is looking for an experienced Heavy Diesel Mechanic to work for our Casper, WY division. This position will require you to be able to work both independently and as a team player. Working in extreme weather conditions should be expected.
Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance and repairs of a significant nature on all types of equipment and/or assist with repairs, improvements, and maintenance to ensure equipment is in safe working condition.
- Conduct repairs including, but not limited to: hydraulic repair, brake work, engines, air compressors, transmissions, electrical repairs, and welding.
- Safely operate equipment, standard and specialty tools, welders, hoists, and other lifting devices on a daily basis.
- Troubleshoot equipment maintenance problems to properly diagnose components and determine the method and extent of repair necessary.
- Read, interpret, analyze, and apply information in technical manuals and schematics.
- Anticipate needed parts and supplies, disassemble equipment and parts, fabricate parts when needed, and reassemble equipment and parts.
- Communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written) with frequent contact and communication with others within and outside the company.
- Work will be performed in the local shop.
Requirements
- Over 2 years up to and including 4 years of post-high school, work, military, institutional, or vocational experience in the mechanic field or maintaining road construction equipment with demonstrated mechanical knowledge to diagnose components, troubleshoot, repair, communicate, and document.
- Reasoning ability equivalent to applying principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
- Mathematical ability equivalent to shop math.
- Language ability equivalent to reading safety rules, instructions in the use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, and methods and procedures in mechanical drawing and layout work; speaks clearly and distinctly.
- Proven experience handling multiple projects and priorities while maintaining tight deadlines; highly organized with attention to detail.
- Accurately complete work orders or other maintenance repair documentation.
- Ensure OSHA, DOT, MSHA, EPA, DNR, and Knife River safety and environmental regulation compliance.
- Responsible to provide own basic hand tools, pneumatics, and some specialty tools.
Work environment
- Exposure to varying elements and all weather conditions.
- Atmospheric conditions, proximity to moving mechanical parts, and exposure to fumes, odors, mists, adhesives, loud noise, and vibration.
- May work within a structural building or outdoors.
- While performing routine maintenance or other mechanical activities, may be required to frequently: stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, reach, handle, finger, near acuity, and depth perception; occasionally: hearing, climb, twist, and color vision.
- Lift 20–50 lbs occasionally, 10–25 lbs frequently, and up to 10 lbs constantly.
