About the Role

The mission of the Student Health & Well-Being (SHW) cluster is to promote a culture of health and well-being for the student community, deliver equitable high-quality innovative services, incorporate inclusive approaches, and celebrate diversity, with the goal of adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors contributing to the academic success and personal development of all students.

The UC San Diego SHW cluster, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind, and spirit. This includes promotion and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the Executive Director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Strategic Planning, Innovation and Research (SPIR), Assessments and Analytics (SHAA), and SHW Administration (ADM).

Health Promotion Services (HPS) is responsible for campus-wide education, outreach, and prevention efforts on a variety of health topics. HPS runs The Zone and the Student Well-Being Lounge, well-being spaces for students. SHW uses a public health model in conceptualizing the delivery of programs and services. HPS provides services related to alcohol and other drugs (AOD), gender-affirming care, smoking cessation, sleep, stress, sexual health, and mental health topics among others. HPS utilizes peer educators, health coaching, marketing, and a variety of campus-wide campaigns to impact students on a population basis. Additional programs are targeted to groups of students at higher risk on selected well-being topics.

Reporting to and in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Health Promotion Services, this position provides leadership in vision, planning, implementation, and evaluation of campus-wide health promotion practices to create an environment that promotes student success and personal development. The incumbent will be a Health Educator focusing on general health (e.g., basic nutrition, physical activity, health literacy, micro-mobility safety, etc.), in addition to providing general health education for undergraduates, graduate, and professional students.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and make recommendations on the development, revision, and implementation of well-planned theory- and evidence-based interventions and outreaches.
• Develop, implement, evaluate, and continually improve workshops, outreach, presentations, peer leadership programs, and campus-based affinity groups that focus on health promotion and prevention activities.
• Exercise good judgment, innovation, and professional approaches/techniques to solve problems, make decisions, and manage conflict.
• Use skills as a seasoned, experienced health education professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures; resolve a wide range of issues.
• Demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
• Plan, develop, implement, and manage comprehensive health promotion campaigns and general health programs.
• Interact effectively with diverse client groups using excellent interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, flexibility, and patience.
• Communicate effectively and appropriately with an emphasis on professionalism, relating sensitively to diverse, multi-cultural populations.
• Work in a team setting, fostering cooperation and support from other staff.

• Analyze, interpret, and respond to client needs, gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing complex data for application in organizational strategic planning and health promotion program development.
• Create and implement student surveys and assessments; make recommendations for program planning and revisions; provide guidance for evaluation and outcomes reports for programs and activities; collect and produce annual reports.
• Supervise and coordinate outreach activities, recruiting, training, and supervising staff and volunteers.
• Use discretion, maintain confidentiality, and comply with all requirements in the use of computer systems and access to patient, student, employee, and University data in compliance with University, state, and federal guidelines, including HIPAA and FERPA.
• Demonstrate professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior, and attentiveness to others.

• Complete and pass required training assigned by UCOP, UCSD, and SHW on a timely basis.

• Submit incident reports into the UCSD SHW Incident Report System, RL Datix, or current system in use, to report near-misses, process problems, or patient/employee injury events.
• Operate office equipment proficiently, including telephone, printer, copier, scanner, and FAX machines.
• Use business software, specialized applications, and systems used in behavioral health centers/clinics, including Microsoft Office suite, email, and web-based programs.

Requirements

• Seven years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in a related area plus three years of related experience/training.
• Thorough knowledge of the health promotion and education field.
• Ability to interpret trends, define problems, conceptualize solutions, and convert them into practical applications.
• Knowledge of environmental prevention strategies and harm reduction strategies in health education.
• Thorough knowledge of the design and delivery of related programs.
• Demonstrated program assessment, planning, and reporting skills.
• Skills associated with both the development and delivery of health education programs and services.
• Effective interpersonal skills to interact with diverse client groups.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including public speaking.
• Ability to analyze, interpret, and respond to client needs.
• Proficiency with computers and online programs/software, including MS Office Suite (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Public Health or related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Special Conditions

• Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
• Must complete initial mandatory health requirements, including a current clear TB test and flu vaccination. In the absence of immunization records, a titer test or blood test may be required.
• Must be able to work various hours and locations based on clinical or business needs, including evenings and weekends.
• Occasional travel may be required.
• Must have access to reliable transportation to travel to off-site meetings and events.

Pay

$72,975 - $100,000 / Year
