FOG Inspector - Engineering Specialist 1 - 3

About the role

The City of Renton is seeking a skilled engineering professional to serve as a FOG Inspector within the Wastewater Utility Engineering Division. This position supports the City’s Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) Source Control Program through field inspections of commercial food facilities, technical review of grease interceptors, education on proper grease handling and pretreatment, and maintaining compliance information in GIS and tracking systems. The ideal candidate combines technical knowledge, sound judgment, and strong communication skills to work effectively with businesses, contractors, City staff, and the community while helping protect Renton’s wastewater infrastructure.

Pay

Engineering Specialist 1: $76,092–$92,724 annually
Engineering Specialist 2: $88,188–$107,448 annually
Engineering Specialist 3: $97,368–$118,692 annually
Salary placement is based on education, experience, and qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Conducting field inspections and evaluating sites for compliance with City codes and requirements.
• Reviewing engineering plans, permits, construction documents, and cost estimates.
• Providing technical guidance to the public, contractors, developers, and City staff.
• Managing engineering projects and coordinating with contractors, consultants, and outside agencies.
• Preparing and maintaining engineering records, reports, maps, and project documentation.
• Researching issues and recommending solutions to engineering and compliance concerns.
• Supporting utility, transportation, surface water, and capital improvement projects as assigned.
• Participating in meetings, project coordination, and community communication.
• Maintaining a collaborative, respectful, and inclusive work environment.

Requirements

Engineering Specialist 1

• Two years of college-level coursework in civil engineering and/or drafting, or two years of relevant education and experience.
• Valid driver's license.

Engineering Specialist 2

• Two years of college-level coursework in civil engineering and/or drafting and two years of civil engineering experience, or four years of relevant education and experience.
• Valid driver's license.

Engineering Specialist 3

• Two years of college-level coursework in civil engineering and/or drafting and four years of increasingly responsible civil engineering experience, or six years of relevant education and experience.
• Valid driver's license.
• All levels require successful completion of applicable driving record and background checks.

Work Environment

Work is performed in both office and field settings and may involve driving to off-site locations and working outdoors in various weather conditions. Evening or weekend work and occasional night meetings may be required.
