About the role
The City of Durham’s Department of Water Management (DWM) seeks an Engineering Inspector to join our team of over 380 talented and dedicated employees. As an Engineering Inspector, you will inspect civil engineering infrastructure being constructed or repaired in the public right-of-way, ensuring conformance to approved plans and City standards.
Responsibilities
- Performs advanced construction inspections for City contracts; assures conformance to approved plans and City standards.
- Documents observations daily electronically according to the prescribed departmental standards for record keeping. Notifies supervisor of substandard or non-conforming construction.
- Assists department by providing technical assistance to personnel; meeting with contractors and related personnel; and conducting project inspections.
- Participates actively in the project acceptance process by conducting initial walk-through inspections and creating a punch-list of non-conforming construction to be corrected by the contractor. Follows up with re-inspecting corrections for compliance.
- Inspects infrastructure for acceptance by checking grade, concrete forms, asphalt repairs, CCTV videos and reports, other water and sanitary sewer plans and specifications and reports, subsurface soil conditions, and other pertinent parameters. Calculates slopes, measures, and confirms dimensions.
- Performs field reconnaissance in support of department engineering projects.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- A High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSet, TASC)
- Three years of related experience sufficient to understand the operational and technical processes involved in the assignment.
- A valid North Carolina Class “C” Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record obtained within the timeframe established by the City.
Additional Preferred Skills
- City Works or other asset management software experience
- Able to work non-standard working hours as needed
- Certifications related to the job
- Five (5) years of related experience
