FIT NYC Adjunct Faculty Pool - Menswear Design, Patternmaking, and Construction

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), part of the State University of New York, is an internationally renowned college of art, design, business, and technology with a strong emphasis on liberal arts. FIT offers a wide range of outstanding programs relevant to today's rapidly changing industries, granting AAS, BFA, BS, MA, MFA, and MPS degrees. The Fashion Department within the School of Art and Design seeks a part-time adjunct faculty member to educate the next generation of creative, socially responsible, and globally relevant professionals.

About the Role

The Fashion Department is recruiting a pool of applicants for possible adjunct teaching positions. Successful candidates may teach one or more of the following courses:

• Menswear Construction (Levels 1 & 2): Instruction in foundational construction skills for menswear garments, ranging from dress shirts to fully lined jackets and coats. Focuses on sewing and construction, not tailoring, including proper use of machinery, garment assembly, seams, finishes, and professional standards.
• Menswear Patternmaking (Levels 1-4): Instruction in patternmaking techniques, including development of basic slopers, pattern identification, tool usage, and hands-on design room methods. Covers basic through advanced techniques for creating garment prototypes, emphasizing precision, technical accuracy, and professional finishing standards.

Adjunct instructors deliver course material, assess student performance, provide guidance both in and out of the classroom, and submit grades on time. Additional duties may be assigned consistent with the position.

Requirements

• Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree required.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of professional experience as a senior fashion designer and/or technician.
  • Knowledge of basic construction machinery and construction techniques.
  • Basic computer literacy.
• Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
  • Prior college-level teaching experience.

Skills

• Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of menswear patternmaking and/or construction techniques.
• Ability to teach hands-on design room techniques with clarity and precision.
• Familiarity with classroom technology and college course management systems.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.

Pay

Compensation is governed by the UCE-FIT Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The base rate is $89.98 per hour based on minimum qualifications. The final rate, step, and appointment rank may be higher depending on the candidate's ability to demonstrate additional criteria for hiring "above the first step," as outlined in the CBA Adjunct Salary Schedules.
