FIT NYC Adjunct Faculty Pool - Fashion Design, Draping, Patternmaking, and Construction

About the role

The Fashion Department is recruiting a pool of applicants for possible adjunct teaching positions. Successful candidates may teach one or more of the following courses:

• Materials and Construction (Sewing Levels 1 & 2): Foundational skills of garment construction, from skirts to fully lined sewn blazers. Focus on sewing (not tailoring), proper use of basic construction machinery, garment assembly, seams, finishes, and professional standards.
• Design Studio (Draping Levels 1, 2, & 3): Hands-on draping techniques, beginning with fundamental skills such as proper tool use, fabric grain, and garment balance. Progression from unstructured draping to structured techniques for complex garments, integrating finishing details and the relationship between 2D patternmaking and 3D draping.
• Apparel Design Studio - Patternmaking (Level 3): Patternmaking techniques including development of basic slopers, pattern identification, proper tool usage, and hands-on design room methods. Creation of design prototypes using basic through advanced techniques, with knowledge of construction processes and machinery to link design and production.

Adjunct instructors deliver course material, assess student performance, provide guidance in and out of the classroom, and submit grades on time. Course descriptions are available in the online catalog.

Requirements

• Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate’s degree required.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of professional experience as a senior fashion designer and/or technician.
  • Knowledge of basic construction machinery required.
  • Basic computer literacy required.
• Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts degree preferred.
  • Prior college-level teaching experience preferred.

Skills

• Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of draping, patternmaking, and/or construction techniques.
• Ability to teach hands-on design room techniques with clarity and precision.
• Familiarity with classroom technology and college course management systems.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.

Pay

$89.98 per hour based on minimum qualifications. The final rate, step, and appointment rank may be higher if the candidate demonstrates additional qualifications per the UCE-FIT Collective Bargaining Agreement.
