FIT NYC Adjunct Faculty Pool - Film Studies

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business, and technology within the State University of New York, invites applications for a part-time adjunct faculty position in the Film, Media, Performing Arts Department, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. About the Role

The Film, Media, and Performing Arts department seeks applicants for adjunct teaching positions in Film Studies. Successful candidates will teach courses focused on critical analysis of film, including film history, theory, genre studies, and/or global cinema.

Responsibilities

• Teach film studies courses at introductory and/or advanced levels, emphasizing critical analysis, interpretation, and historical context.
• Lead discussion-based classes encouraging close reading of films and active student participation.
• Introduce key concepts in film theory, historiography, and visual analysis.
• Design and assess written assignments to develop students' analytical and argumentative skills.
• Provide historical, cultural, and theoretical frameworks for understanding cinema across periods and regions.
• Deliver course material, assess student performance, offer guidance, and submit grades on time.

Requirements

• Earned Master’s degree, plus thirty (30) additional graduate credits and/or evidence of scholarly achievement, professional activities, and teaching experience.
• The Master’s degree requirement may be waived if the candidate is in a doctoral program where it is not required.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD or other terminal degree in Film Studies, Media Studies, or a related field.

Skills

• Demonstrated knowledge of film history, theory, and critical approaches to cinema.
• Ability to teach close analysis of film form (cinematography, editing, sound, narrative structure).
• Strong written and verbal communication skills to guide student discussion and critical thinking.
• Experience designing and assessing analytical and/or research-based writing assignments.
• Ability to contextualize films within broader cultural, historical, and global frameworks.

Additional Information

This is a part-time adjunct position beginning in Spring 2026. Review of applications will commence immediately and continue until the position is filled. The department will maintain a pool of candidates for potential future assignments and contact applicants whose qualifications align with programmatic needs.

Pay

$89.98 per hour based on minimum qualifications. Final rate, step, and appointment rank are determined by demonstrated qualifications, in accordance with the UCE-FIT Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) Adjunct Salary Schedules.
