Field Tech, Sr. Field Tech - Power Systems Tech II, III, or IV

Field Technicians (Power Systems / NETA) perform service, test, and maintenance on various types of power transmission and distribution equipment.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, test, troubleshoot, perform start-up, and collect data on low, medium, and/or high voltage (up to 500kV) electrical systems.
• Test low, medium, and/or high voltage switchgear and circuit breakers.
• Perform inspection, maintenance, testing, and repair of transformers (45 KVA to 130 MVA, dry type and/or oil filled) and related equipment.
• Maintain, test, recondition, and repair circuit breakers: low voltage (480V, molded case and air-magnetic) and medium voltage (up to 15KV, air-magnetic and vacuum).
• Test and inspect low and medium voltage cable installations.
• Operate high voltage test equipment, including Doble Power Factor test sets.
• Perform start-up, troubleshooting, and repair services on controls and transfer schemes.
• Participate in emergency on-call rotation and respond to customer emergencies promptly.
• Ensure all work complies with regulatory laws and industry standards (NETA, NEC, OSHA, NFPA).
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED.
• Valid driver’s license (for positions utilizing a company vehicle).
• Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office.
• Ability to work safely and adhere to electrical safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, arc-flash, and shock hazard analyses.
• Good theoretical understanding of electricity and problem-solving aptitude.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Dependability, responsibility, and strong organizational skills.
• Good customer service, time management, and follow-up skills.
• Ability to work effectively with customers, peers, and management to resolve issues.

Qualifications by Level

• Field Tech: Minimum 1 year of related experience. Knowledge of NETA, NEC, OSHA, and NFPA standards. Preferred experience with MCCs, breakers, relay testing, oil testing, infrared scanning, or military training (e.g., Army Prime Power, Air Force Electrical Power Production, Navy).
• Power Systems Tech II: Minimum 2 years of related experience. NETA Level II Certification. Ability to work under direct supervision and ensure personal safety.
• Power Systems Tech III: Minimum 5 years of related experience. NETA Level III Certification. Ability to mentor Level I and II technicians, lead projects, and perform electrical power switching.
• Power Systems Tech IV: Associate degree in a related field or equivalent experience, plus minimum 5 years (or 10 years without a degree). NETA Level IV Certification. Ability to supervise large projects, multiple crews, and work independently. Experience with complex investigations, testing, and report writing.
• Senior Field Tech: Minimum 5 years of related experience. Strong background in high voltage equipment (up to 230kV). Knowledge of NEC, NETA, OSHA, IEEE, and NFPA standards. Ability to complete projects on budget and produce on-site job reports.

Additional Information

This is a full-time position based in Charlotte, NC, with up to 50% travel required. Pay ranges from $36 to $65 per hour (depending on skillset, certification, and experience) for Sr. Field Techs or NETA Certified II, III, and IV technicians, with eligibility for overtime. Daily meal and incidentals per diem provided.
