General Statement
Responsible for organizing workflow patterns and ensuring that policies and procedures are interpreted correctly, develops or modifies local policies in accordance with State and Health Department standards. Plans program goals and objectives, participates in incorporating nutrition services into other health department program areas and evaluates effectiveness of program plans. Develops and justifies budgetary needs, monitors expenditures and participates in various personnel meetings and health department committees. Responsible for the selection, evaluation and disciplinary action of employees. Employee supervises as well as coordinates and provides training for 3 nutritionists, 4 processing clerk’s, 1 medical lab assistant, 2 Spanish interpreters and 2 Breastfeeding Peer Counselors. Provides direct patient services including comprehensive, complex nutrition services to clients with high risk medical or nutritional problems. The employee receives the more complex critical referrals which require a more comprehensive knowledge of nutrition as it relates to disease pathophysiology. Responsible for overseeing the nutrition component of other health department clinics such as child health and maternity. Responsible for providing medical nutrition therapy services for the high risk maternity clinic. This service requires the employee to have a more complex nutrition counseling to patients at high risk for medical/nutritional problems. Independently analyzes client’s medical condition, researches nutrition requirements of the respective medical problem, recommends a treatment plan in concert with an interdisciplinary team approach. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Essential Functions
- 40% Supervision - Manage the Union County WIC Program. Supervise ten employees in order to provide the service to Union County applicants. Ensure that each employee is trained on the rules and regulations of the WIC Program. Provide guidance in organizational and personnel matters, and in role expectations. Interviewing and hiring for the nutritionist and clerk positions. Manage Medical Nutrition Therapy services for pregnant women, children/adolescents and supervise one employee in the provision of this service. Supervise one employee in the provision of service to high risk maternity and child health clinics. Update and review local policies and procedures and ensure program manual is reviewed and signed yearly. Develop yearly budget and monitors expenditures.
- 40% Nutrition Assessment - Provide nutrition assessment of WIC patients and develop appropriate plan of care. Document assessment, plan of care, and follow-up in patient’s record. Discuss with patient their individual nutritional needs. Evaluate patient’s socioeconomic status and refer to other community programs. Provide medical nutrition therapy to more complex critical referrals such as pregnant women, children/adolescents.
- 5% Personal Relations - Works with MCH clinics to help coordinate patients for Medical Nutrition Therapy and/or WIC services. Correspond with doctors about medical and/or formula requirements. Participates in the Quality Council meetings which oversees the Quality Assurance Program (record review, etc.).
- 10% Public Contact - Deals with clients who can be abusive to WIC or vendor staff. Deals with patients that can be irate and consults with the Nursing Director if unable to satisfy patients. Provide referrals to other state agencies such as Developmental Evaluation Center that can access additional programs available to children with developmental disabilities and chronic illnesses. Communicate with other health professionals in the community such as the hospital lactation consultant, and the hospital dietitian who does diabetes education. Participates in community outreach programs to increase public awareness of the WIC program and the health department services.
Qualifications
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in foods and nutrition, public health nutrition or dietetics, and two years of nutrition experience plus Commission on Dietetic Registration eligibility, or a master’s degree in nutrition or public health nutrition and two years of nutrition experience plus Commission on Dietetic Registration eligibility required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
