About the role
The City of Battle Creek seeks an equipment operator to perform semiskilled work operating various pieces of equipment in the construction, repair, and maintenance of streets, parks, and related operations.
Responsibilities
- Operates a truck to haul materials and equipment.
- Operates a backhoe, snowplow, tractor mower, front-end loader, and other types of heavy automotive equipment.
- Operates and manipulates controls of equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Operates a variety of pneumatic and other hand operated power equipment including cement saw, chain saw, air compressor, paving equipment, and other devices.
- Operates a tree chipper, stump chipper, and hydro seeder; trims and removes trees and brush.
- Repairs and maintains roads, curbs, sidewalks, etc.; maintains shoulders, guardrails, and ditches; repairs and replaces culverts; sets and places concrete forms, pours and levels concrete; makes asphalt saw cuts and removes asphalt; levels and compacts ground, installs new street material.
- Aids in traffic control; installs, maintains, removes barricades and traffic control devices.
- Aids in loading, unloading, and transporting heavy equipment.
- Performs manual labor such as patching pot holes, cleaning catch basins, and crack sealing; removes road kill and debris; sets up and tears down for community events; repairs broken picnic tables and playground equipment; cleans and maintains equipment.
- Lubricates, fuels, cleans, maintains, and services equipment; assists in repair of utility cuts.
- Provides accurate daily documentation including, but not limited to, equipment logs, pre/post vehicle inspection, signing for general materials, etc.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Up to 1 year experience operating a variety of heavy equipment, pneumatic tools, and hand operated equipment.
- Must be able to demonstrate proficient operation of a dump/plow truck and front-end loader.
Special Requirements
- Commercial Learners Permit must be obtained within 30 calendar days upon hire.
- Valid CDL “A” upon completion of probation.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
- Regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
- Sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements).
- Reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public.
- Exposure to wet humid conditions working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
- Frequent exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather).
- Occasionally exposed to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to known and unknown contaminants.
