Equipment Operator 1 - Streets

Primary Function

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of trucks and other automotive equipment and for promptly performing assignments according to an established routine.

• Follows safe practices in the performance of duties.
• Drives a dump truck to haul construction materials and supplies for street construction, water and sewer installation, and repair of various other public works projects.
• Operates a truck mounted snowplow and drives a dump truck with a trailer.
• Performs manual labor involving loading and unloading trucks, digging of ditches, felling and trimming of trees, cutting brush, and similar tasks.
• Operates a rubber tire loader in general maintenance work and snow removal operations.
• Drives tractors for cutting grass.
• Uses a jackhammer and other power-driven equipment.

Typical Qualifications

• Graduation from High School or completion of a GED is required.
• Bureau of Sewer Collections and Water T&D: Possession of a Class B commercial driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with a tanker endorsement (N) and/or the ability to obtain the tanker endorsement (N) within 3 months of hire.
• Bureau of Streets: Possession of a valid Class B commercial driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and one year of experience in the operation of heavy automotive equipment.
• Construction/Pipe Crew: Possession of a Class B commercial driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with the ability to obtain a Class A commercial license within 3 months of hire.

• Knowledge of safe practices related to Public Works.
• Proficient use of hand tools is required.
• Able to operate a vehicle on private and public streets is required.
• Able to safely enter/exit and work within manholes and/or confined spaces is required.
• Able to climb up/down ladder wells and climb unprotected heights is required.
• Proven ability to work well under pressure and to maintain positive interactions is required.
• Positive interpersonal skills are required.
• Proven ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment is required.
• Proven ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment is required.
• Proven ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English is required.
