Pay

• Equipment Operator Journey 1: $27.84 hourly
• Equipment Operator Journey 2: $29.66 hourly

Pay is based on the location of the selected applicant; salaries will be discussed at the time of the interview.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment including loaders, motor graders, dump trucks, airport snow removal machines, sand spreaders, backhoes, and tractor-trailer combinations.
• Perform snow and ice removal on runways, taxiways, aprons, roadways, parking lots, and sidewalks during rapidly changing weather conditions.
• Maintain airfield infrastructure through pavement marking installation, asphalt and concrete repairs, vegetation management, and security inspections.
• Communicate effectively on company and air-to-ground radio systems while operating safely in an active airfield environment around aircraft and airport operations.
• Support emergency response activities and perform a wide variety of maintenance tasks that provide experience and exposure unmatched by most equipment operator positions.

If applying for the Equipment Operator Journey 1, please note that you will be limited to operating equipment that falls within the Class B CDL requirements. All Equipment Operator Journey 2 positions require a Class A CDL and are expected to operate all equipment.

Work Environment

This position is located at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, where you'll work at the center of one of the world's busiest aviation hubs. Most days, you will be part of a highly coordinated team operating specialized equipment in synchronized formations across runways, taxiways, and aprons, requiring precision, communication, and teamwork to safely maintain critical airfield infrastructure.

From operating heavy equipment alongside widebody aircraft to responding to snowstorms, maintaining pavement markings, and supporting airport operations around the clock, you'll experience a dynamic work environment unlike almost any other equipment operator position.

Special requirements:

• Obtain an Airport Security Badge and maintain it for the term of employment.
• Airport Movement Area Driver Certification – Required to operate vehicles in aircraft movement areas to ensure compliance with airfield safety and communication protocols (Federal Aviation Administration 14 CFR Part 139.329). This training will be provided by the state and is required prior to vehicle operations.

Qualifications

Vacancies in this job class are filled through Union referral, except for promotions, demotions, transfers, and emergency appointments. This job class is part of a series of competency-based class specifications created for career areas within the Labor, Trades, and Crafts Unit. Commercial Driver's License

This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383), to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety-sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.

• Equipment Operator Journey 2: A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of hire. A conditional hire approval can only be given for endorsements. The proposed appointee must successfully obtain an N-Tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
• Equipment Operator Journey 1: A Class B Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of hire. A conditional hire approval can be given to applicants that do not yet possess a Class A CDL. The proposed appointee must successfully obtain a Class A CDL within 180 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

Additional Information

• Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and cannot start work in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) position until confirmation of passing the required pre-employment drug test is received.
• This vacancy may be filled at either the 1 or 2 level depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. To be considered for all levels for which you qualify, you must apply for each vacancy separately.
• Candidates for this position must be eligible for an airport identification badge in accordance with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations (49 CFR 1542), which requires fingerprinting and a criminal background check. The successful applicant must pass a fingerprint-based criminal history record check as well as a comprehensive background investigation, along with a Transportation Security Administration Security Threat Assessment.
