About the role

The Election Assistant II, NC works under the supervision of an Election Assistant III or other higher-level supervisor on a variety of assignments essential to the conduct of primary, general, and special elections and related functions of the Department of Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in election-related duties, such as conducting recruitment for specialized operations, assisting in coordinating election information centers, and placing vote center leads and assistant leads.
  • Receives and accounts for election materials and supplies delivered to vote centers, headquarters, and other facilities; coordinates operational setup and removal of materials and equipment.
  • Serves as lead of a vote center or mobile pop-up center, including opening and closing vote centers, processing voters, answering election-related inquiries, reconciling end-of-day reports, and dropping off voted ballots.
  • Assists in developing training courses related to election processes, including determining course content, preparing training outlines, scheduling training sessions, and conducting classes.
  • Participates in producing election-related training or employee orientation videos by operating camera, lighting, sound, or editing equipment, or by scriptwriting.
  • Transports supplies and election materials between warehouses, truck yards, vote centers, and other operations.
  • Procures and assesses locations for vote centers to ensure compliance with ADA guidelines.
  • Configures, installs, and tests personal computers and printers; troubleshoots software and hardware problems.
  • Proofreads, reviews, and edits election materials for grammar and content in English or other languages; translates election materials as needed.
  • Recruits and places multilingual election workers.
  • Performs various clerical duties related to the elections process.

Requirements

  • Six months of clerical, computer technical support, or prior election experience (paid or volunteer). Part-time experience will be prorated on a month-for-month basis.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation for job-related essential functions.

For this examination, computer technical support is defined as experience in configuring, installing, and testing personal computers and computer peripheral devices.

For this examination, prior election experience is defined as experience working on assignments for the preparation and execution of local, state, and municipal elections.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical Class 2 - Light Work: Administrative and clerical positions requiring occasional light lifting (up to 10 pounds) and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
  • Physical Class 3 - Moderate Work: Requires standing or walking most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
  • Physical Class 4 - Arduous Work: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces.

Additional Information

This is a noncompetitive assessment process; taking an exam is not required. Selective certification lists may be prepared for the following language specialties: Armenian, Bengali, Burmese, Chinese, Farsi, Gujarati, Hindi, Hmong, Indonesian, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Lao, Mongolian, Nepali, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Telugu, Thai, Urdu, or Vietnamese. Candidates must indicate their foreign language on the application and supplemental questionnaire to be considered for a language-selective certification list.

Applicants will be placed on the eligible register for a period of twelve (12) months. Temporary positions may be filled at any of the following work sites:

  • Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Headquarters – Norwalk, CA
  • Ballot Processing Center – City of Industry, CA
  • VSAP Operation Center – Whittier, CA
  • Tally Operation Center – Downey, CA
  • VCST – Santa Fe Springs, CA
  • Field Work – Various Locations Throughout LA County

Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
