Director, Cloud Operations

About the role
The Director of Cloud Operations leads a major functional area of Vertafore’s hybrid cloud infrastructure platform spanning AWS and colocation datacenter environments. This role is responsible for the reliability, scalability, automation, and governance of foundational infrastructure services including compute, networking, storage, identity, and infrastructure security. The Director works closely with engineering leadership across Product Development, Site Reliability Engineering, and Information Security to ensure infrastructure platforms enable reliable SaaS delivery. This role provides both operational leadership and strategic direction while managing a global team of senior engineers and/or engineering managers.
Responsibilities
- Infrastructure Platform Leadership
- Oversee large segments of hybrid infrastructure including AWS platforms and colocation-based compute, storage, and networking environments.
- Ensure availability, scalability, and operational resilience of foundational services such as networking, storage, DNS, identity, and virtualization platforms.
- Drive infrastructure modernization initiatives supporting cloud adoption and hybrid architecture.
- Cloud Governance & Platform Operations
- Oversee AWS organizational structure, account governance, and infrastructure policy enforcement.
- Partner with FinOps and global organizational teams to drive cost visibility, optimization, and financial governance.
- Ensure compliance with infrastructure security and operational standards.
- Automation & Infrastructure Engineering
- Lead the adoption of Infrastructure-as-Code and automation frameworks such as Terraform and CloudFormation.
- Drive improvements in infrastructure provisioning, lifecycle management, and operational tooling.
- Promote engineering best practices for infrastructure development, automation, and platform reliability.
- Security & Compliance
- Partner with security teams to enforce IAM standards, privileged access controls, and infrastructure hardening.
- Ensure consistent patching, vulnerability management, and access governance across cloud and datacenter environments.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with SRE to ensure infrastructure platforms support reliability goals and service level objectives.
- Work with Product Engineering leaders to align infrastructure capabilities with product growth and architectural evolution.
- Leadership & Organizational Development
- Manage and mentor engineering managers and/or senior engineers.
- Drive hiring, performance management, and career development.
- Foster a culture of ownership, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Required
- 12+ years of experience in infrastructure, cloud engineering, or platform engineering.
- 5+ years in engineering leadership roles managing infrastructure teams.
- Deep experience with AWS services, VMWare, and hybrid cloud architectures.
- Strong knowledge of networking, virtualization, storage, and distributed systems.
- Experience implementing infrastructure automation and Infrastructure-as-Code.
- Demonstrated experience operating infrastructure platforms supporting large-scale SaaS environments.
- Strong ability to utilize AI tools as a force multiplier and advocate for their use by teams.
- Preferred
- Experience operating hybrid cloud platforms across AWS and colocation datacenters.
- Background supporting regulated industries.
- Experience implementing cloud governance and FinOps practices.
