This posting serves to fill multiple Designer positions in our Mechanical Design Engineering group at The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL.
Schedule & Travel
- Hybrid work schedule: four (4) days in-office and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment).
- Mix of field and office work, including site visits to various generating facilities.
- Up to 25% travel (day and overnight) required.
- Ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with internet access.
- Relocation assistance may be provided for candidates outside a reasonable commute distance.
Responsibilities
- Make safety the number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example.
- Prepare high-quality design packages for mechanical systems and facilities (new or modifications) using CAD-based tools and Southern Company design standards.
- Develop scope definition, provide schedule input, create material takeoffs, and review fabrication drawings.
- Coordinate work with other disciplines, clients, suppliers, and contractors.
- Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company personnel to resolve standards and material issues.
- Review and coordinate vendor design documents to ensure conformance to design requirements.
- Provide support to Discipline Leads, Construction Services, Field Services, Project Management, Startup, and Site Personnel.
- Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction, and post-construction; assist with system checkout and startup as needed (overnight travel required).
- Participate in design review meetings.
- Provide work direction and oversight for junior designers and drafters.
- Handle multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and use effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
- Adapt to changing project requirements and customer needs.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent; additional technical training preferred (technical school or software provider).
- Experience in the design of new construction and power generation facility retrofit projects or similar heavy industrial facilities.
- 3D modeling experience or ability to learn 3D software; Autodesk Plant 3D proficiency highly desired.
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to conduct design functions and discipline scope management with little or no supervision.
- Detailed knowledge of mechanical engineering drawing principles and preparation of deliverables.
- Extensive AutoCAD and 3D modeling software experience; ability to learn new 3D design and business unit software.
- Ability to apply value-added solutions.
- Detailed knowledge of cost estimating and quantity takeoffs.
- Detailed knowledge of construction methods, equipment, techniques, and associated costs.
- Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and apply design criteria and government regulations to design and construction drawings.
- Ability to make independent decisions with minimal information and little consultation with management.
- Proficient in problem-solving, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Understand and promote the value TSS brings to the Operating Companies and plants.
