About the role
This position is responsible for mechanical design work and preparation of deliverables to support Southern Company’s Mechanical Design Group for new generation projects and retrofit projects at generating plants for Southern Company Generation with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, costs, and customer satisfaction. The position will require some travel (approximately 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.
Responsibilities
- Make SAFETY our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example.
- Prepare high quality design packages needed to construct (new or modify existing) mechanical systems and facilities using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standards.
- Develop, prepare, check, and coordinate designs, design drawings, and other documents required for plant mechanical systems or components according to applicable codes and standards.
- Create material takeoffs and review fabrication drawings.
- Cookordination work with other disciplines, clients, suppliers, and contractors.
- Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company personnel to resolve standards and material issues.
- Review and coordinate vendor design document reviews to ensure conformance to design requirements.
- Provide support to Discipline Leads, Construction Services, Field Services, Project Management, Startup and Site Personnel.
- Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction and post-construction.
- Aid in system checkout and startup when necessary.
- Participate in design review meetings.
- Provide work direction and oversight for junior designers and drafters.
- Handle multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and use effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
- Adapt to changing project requirements and customer needs.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Additional technical training is preferred (technical school or software provider).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in the design of new construction and power generation facility retrofit projects or similar heavy industrial facilities.
- 3D modeling experience or ability to learn 3D software.
- Autodesk Plant 3D modeling experience and proficiency is highly desired.
Skills & Abilities
- Possess abilities to conduct design functions and discipline scope management with little or no supervision.
- Extensive AutoCAD and 3D modeling software experience.
- Ability to learn new 3D design and business unit software.
- Take the lead role for detailed design activities.
- Ability to apply value-added solutions.
- Detailed knowledge of cost estimating and quantity takeoffs.
- Detailed knowledge of construction methods, equipment, techniques and associated costs.
- Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply design criteria and government regulations to design and construction drawings.
- Proficient in problem solving, analytical, and interpersonal communications skills.
- Understand the value T&PS brings to the OpCos and plants.
- General Computer skills to be proficient with standard office software applications.
- Ability to be a self-starter and exhibit strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate technical issues simply.
- Ability to work well in a team environment and have the ability to develop and build relationships at all levels.
- Effective time management and organizational skills sufficient to manage multiple projects with various priorities and competing deadlines.
