Designer - Mechanical Design

This posting serves to fill multiple Designer positions in our Mechanical Design Engineering group.

Schedule

Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment). This position will require a mix of both field and office work. Field work can include site visits to various generating facilities and may require overnight travel. Up to 25% travel (day and overnight) is expected. Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.

About the role

This position is responsible for mechanical design work and preparation of deliverables to support Southern Company’s Mechanical Design Group for new generation projects and retrofit projects at generating plants with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, costs, and customer satisfaction. The Designer shall develop, prepare, check, and coordinate designs, design drawings, and other documents required for plant mechanical systems or components according to applicable codes and standards. The individual shall possess a solid understanding of 3D CAD modeling and piping design techniques.

• Perform site walkdowns and assessments on an as-needed basis to support design efforts.
• Prepare and oversee mechanical power system design including P&IDs, piping isometrics, general arrangement drawings, and equipment or commodity specifications.
• Thoroughly familiar with piping design including a solid working knowledge of applicable ANSI or ASME codes and standards.

Responsibilities

• Make SAFETY our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example.
• Work as a leader or team member to prepare high-quality design packages needed to construct (new or modify existing) mechanical systems and facilities using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standards.
• Develop scope definition, provide schedule input, create material takeoffs, and review fabrication drawings.
• Coordinate work with other disciplines, clients, suppliers, and contractors.
• Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company personnel to resolve standards and material issues.
• Review and coordinate vendor design document reviews to ensure conformance to design requirements.
• Provide support to Discipline Leads, Construction Services, Field Services, Project Management, Startup, and Site Personnel.
• Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction, and post-construction. Assist with system checkout and startup when necessary.
• Participate in design review meetings.
• Provide work direction and oversight for junior designers and drafters.
• Handle multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and use effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
• Adapt to changing project requirements and customer needs.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent. Additional technical training preferred (technical school or software provider).
• Experience in the design of new construction and power generation facility retrofit projects or similar heavy industrial facilities.
• 3D modeling experience or ability to learn 3D software. Autodesk Plant 3D modeling experience and proficiency is highly desired.

Skills

• Conduct design functions and discipline scope management with little or no supervision.
• Detailed knowledge of mechanical engineering drawing principles and preparation of deliverables.
• Extensive AutoCAD and 3D modeling software experience. Ability to learn new 3D design and business unit software.
• Apply value-added solutions.
• Detailed knowledge of cost estimating and quantity takeoffs.
• Detailed knowledge of construction methods, equipment, techniques, and associated costs.
• Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and apply design criteria and government regulations to design and construction drawings.
• Make independent decisions with minimal information and little consultation with management.
• Proficient in problem-solving, analytical, and interpersonal communications skills.
