CRIME ANALYST II

About the role

The Crime Analyst II (CA II) in the Business Compliance Unit, Certificate of Eligibility (COE) Team, analyzes all initial and renewal COE applications for completeness and updates information into the California Firearms Applicant Reporting System (CFARS).

Responsibilities

• Conduct firearm eligibility checks to determine if applicants are prohibited from acquiring or possessing firearms by researching California and federal statutes and analyzing databases such as:
  • Automated Firearms System (AFS)
  • Automated Criminal History System (ACHS)
  • Wanted Persons System (WPS)
  • Mental Health Firearms Prohibition System (MHFPS)
  • California Restraining and Protection Order System (CARPOS)
  • Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV)
  • Applicant Processor
  • Law Enforcement Enterprise Portal (LEEP)
  • National Instant Check System (NICS)
  • National Crime Information Center (NCIC)
• Serve as a subject matter expert for the COE process, ensuring work is completed within state-mandated time frames.
• Recommend status on certificate issuance, denial, or revocation.
• Lead development and implementation of database enhancements for the COE application in CFARS and related databases, including testing.
• Develop, update, and maintain policy and procedure manuals.
• Provide technical assistance and update/track applicant information across various Department of Justice databases.
• Provide BOF management with statistical information.
• Deliver customer service via email, telephone, and written correspondence.
• Back up other analysts in the section.
• Work mandatory overtime or be temporarily redirected to other sections as needed.

Requirements

• Thorough knowledge of California statutory code sections and the criminal justice system.

Pay

$5,189.00 - $6,701.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Effective July 1, 2025, state employees are subject to temporary wage reductions in exchange for Personal Leave Program (PLP) accruals. The specific rate and hours earned vary by bargaining unit.
