FTE: 0.0, per diem non-benefit eligible role. Must be available to work 18-24 hours/week during a 4-6 week training period on day shift, with flexibility to cover 0-40 hours/week afterward, including weekends and holidays.
About the role
We’re seeking a Communication Representative to assist with switchboard operations, manage incoming calls, pages, and messages, and ensure accurate and timely communication. You will fill in for planned and unplanned operator absences, requiring a minimum of one regular scheduled shift and two on-call shifts per month, plus weekend and holiday coverage.
Initial training lasts 4+ weeks (50-100 hours total) and occurs when call volumes are highest, between 8am and 6pm, in 4-6 hour shifts, 18-24 hours per week.
Responsibilities
- Support switchboard operations by handling incoming calls, pages, and messages, ensuring accurate routing and timely communication across the organization.
- Prioritize and manage calls based on urgency while providing excellent customer service to patients, staff, and visitors.
- Monitor alarm systems (fire, medical, panic, gas, weather) and relay critical information to appropriate emergency teams.
- Coordinate after-hours communication, relay messages to on-call staff, and maintain up-to-date contact lists and on-call schedules.
- Arrange auxiliary communication services, including ASL and LEP interpreters, to support patient and visitor needs.
- Assist with daily telecommunications operations, report issues, and support troubleshooting to minimize service disruptions.
- Contribute to process improvement by communicating system inefficiencies and maintaining documentation, logs, and emergency communication records.
- Support emergency response efforts as needed, including participation in the Hospital Emergency Incident Command System.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- One year of experience as a secretary, receptionist, or in customer service in a busy public office (preferred).

Pay
$18.32+ per hour.
Schedule
- Training: 4-6 weeks, 18-24 hours/week, day shift (8am–6pm).
- Ongoing: 0-40 hours/week, including weekends and holidays.
- Minimum commitment: one regular scheduled shift and two on-call shifts per month.
