About the Role

The Charge Nurse provides guidance and support to staff, maintains a safe environment, ensures patient throughput, and directs nursing staff. This role is responsible for the smooth and efficient patient flow within the unit, delegating assignments and supervising support staff in accordance with their level of training and patient acuity. The Charge Nurse collaborates with medical providers to ensure high-quality patient care and also delivers direct clinical care.

The role assumes responsibility for assessing, planning, and implementing direct clinical care for assigned patients on a per-shift basis and at the unit level. The Charge Nurse supervises staff to whom care is delegated and is accountable for supporting the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) in ensuring high-quality, safe, and appropriate nursing care, clinical staff competency, and effective resource management related to patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and support to nursing and support staff.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Ensure efficient patient throughput and smooth unit operations.
  • Delegate assignments and supervise support staff based on training and patient acuity.
  • Collaborate with medical providers to ensure quality patient care.
  • Deliver direct clinical care to assigned patients on a per-shift basis.
  • Assess, plan, and implement patient care at both individual and unit levels.
  • Supervise staff to whom care is delegated, ensuring competency and adherence to standards.
  • Support the CNO in maintaining high-quality, safe, and appropriate nursing care, staff competency, and resource management.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (required).
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing (preferred).
  • Minimum of 1 year of RN experience (required).
  • Current licensure, certification, or registration to practice as an RN in the state of employment (required).
  • AHA BLS certification (required).
  • Additional certifications (e.g., AHA ACLS, PALS, NRP) as required by unit policy (if applicable).
