About the role

The Business Development Representative (BDR) role at Topsort is designed for someone who excels in building relationships, understanding complex business needs, and driving growth through strategic outreach. This is a high-agency role where your efforts directly shape the company's expansion strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Research target accounts deeply, understanding their business models, pain points, and buying signals before reaching out.
  • Own first-touch conversations that qualify and convert, communicating Topsort's value with clarity and credibility.
  • Constantly test and iterate on messaging: what works, what doesn’t, with whom, and why.
  • Use AI tools to create leverage in your workflow: account research, lead prioritization, messaging tests, CRM hygiene, competitive research, and outbound experimentation.
  • Show up in-person at industry events, activations, and field initiatives to build pipeline, represent the brand, and learn directly from the market.
  • Tailor your approach to different buyers, industries, and contexts, ensuring your outreach is tailored to the unique needs of each account.
  • Manage your pipeline end-to-end in HubSpot, maintaining clean data, strong follow-through, and fast updates.
  • Create systems and processes to streamline your workflow, enabling faster execution and better targeting.
  • Treat every interaction as a learning opportunity, using feedback to refine your approach and improve your effectiveness.
  • Travel as part of the role, attending industry events, activations, and field initiatives to build relationships and gather insights.

Requirements

  • 1+ year of experience in a BDR, SDR, outbound sales, customer-facing, founder-led, entrepreneurial, or high-ownership role.
  • Prior BDR/SDR experience is helpful, but not required.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent evidence of analytical ability, commercial curiosity, strong communication, entrepreneurial execution, or self-directed learning.
  • A builder mindset: you have at least one example of something you initiated, built, organized, automated, tested, or improved without being asked.
  • A strong interest in outbound: you are energized by the hunt, finding the right accounts, understanding what matters to them, crafting the right message, and creating opportunity from scratch.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills: you can write sharp, concise outreach and adapt your style to different buyers, industries, and contexts.
  • A commercial intuition: you think about why businesses buy, what creates urgency, who feels the pain, and how a product creates measurable value.
  • A self-directed learner: you can pick up unfamiliar topics quickly, go deep, and develop a useful point of view. You are curious about the actual work: the product, customers, industry, sales motion, and what success looks like.
  • AI-native execution: you have used AI tools to research, automate, systemize, personalize, or improve how work gets done.
  • A high level of ownership and organization: you can manage details, follow up quickly, keep clean records, maintain CRM discipline, and create clarity for yourself and others.
  • A resilient mindset: you see rejection as a learning opportunity and direct feedback as a gift. You learn from mistakes rather than wait for the "right way" to execute, and put the product and mission first.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure: you are energized by a fast, ambiguous, direct environment where feedback is candid, priorities can shift, and you may need to start moving before the full picture is clear.

Qualifications

  • Location: Hybrid, hub-based. Available to work onsite 4 days/week. Travel required for events and field activations.
