Bus Operations Supervisor

Summary

Responsible for performing all supervisory functions of the department (i.e., Window Dispatcher, Radio Dispatcher, Board Builder, Road Supervisor, and Payroll). Assists in supervising Bus Operators, and is responsible for maintaining the bus schedule and times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Keeps the Bus Operations Managers informed of any problems.
  • Maintain Operator attendance, pay, and leave time records through Hastus.
  • Monitor all in-service vehicles to ensure they are maintaining their headways, including analyzing running times, frequency needs, passenger loads, and time point checks.
  • Monitor CAD/AVL radio system to maintain contact with transit vehicle operators to control on-street service and to respond to emergencies and special needs.
  • Respond to Operator calls for assistance in a professional and timely manner.
  • Ensure that road problems and detours are properly documented and communicated to operators and other appropriate stakeholders.
  • Manage schedule revisions and changes.
  • Maintain accurate management data and reports.
  • Maintain updated seniority lists.
  • Accurately document disciplinary action of operators after properly checking employee records and ensure that company policies and procedures are followed.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch regarding location and maintain availability through radio communication throughout the entire shift.
  • Manage daily employee data in Hastus and assign work in Hastus.
  • Maintain an extra board, ensuring that all operators are accounted for, and assign buses to operators while keeping proper records via a computerized transportation system.
  • Maintain accurate sick book records and data entry in Hastus.
  • Prepare daily operational reports regarding road failures, accidents, vehicle changes, run numbers, vehicle mileage, farebox problems, etc.
  • Supervise, instruct, and conduct routine checks of operators relative to schedule adherence, route, proper signage, traffic regulations, safety, operating rules and policies, uniform regulation, general appearance, physical condition, attitude toward the public, proper fare collection, and general demeanor.
  • Manage on-board and vehicular accident scenes, conduct accident investigations, and complete all corresponding reports.
  • Provide on-street supervision of transit operators to ensure compliance with operating standards and to assist with problems; re-establishes schedules in case of breakdowns; assist with unruly passengers in addition to PSO/PSA or law enforcement when necessary; suggests alternative routes due to accidents.
  • Operate transit bus both in and out of service as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Assist Bus Operation Managers with supervision of part-time and full-time Bus Operators. Exercises discretion and independent judgment in making operational decisions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • 2 years’ experience in a supervisory/management capacity.
  • 3 years’ bus transit experience preferred.
  • Prior union environment experience preferred.
  • Valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License required.

Familiar with routes and service area. Extensive knowledge of the transit industry. Must have strong written and verbal skills. Excellent technical skills required with Radio, CAD/AVL experience preferred. Ability to enter, correct, and retrieve data. Proficient in Windows Computer environment and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.). Ability to manage time efficiently and effectively, detail-oriented, and strong organizational skills. Must be able to work a flexible schedule.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Requires frequent bending and kneeling.
  • Requires sitting and/or standing for long periods.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts as assigned to include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions (Rain, Snow, High Winds, etc.).
  • Must be able to safely drive and operate transit and transit-related vehicles, including but not limited to passenger cars, transit vehicles, and the Mobile Command Unit.
