About the role

Provide nursing care to a defined group of patients, adhering to Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington ambulatory Nursing Care Standards, the Nursing Code of Ethics, and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington policies. Coordinate and facilitate health care services for patients across the health care delivery system. The Urgent Care RN will provide care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment similar to a free-standing emergency department, serving patients of all ages (neonates to geriatrics) with a wide range of chief complaints, including neurological, cardiac, and minor injury or illness. Ability to quickly prioritize, use critical thinking, and exercise clinical judgment is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Using the nursing process, assess ongoing nursing care needs for a defined group of patients and use nursing diagnosis to describe this assessment.
  • Develop and implement a written plan of care for patient needs, including health care goals in collaboration with patients and families/significant others.
  • Determine priorities of patient care based on essential needs and available resources.
  • Provide safe and competent nursing interventions, including pre-intervention patient/family education and telephone consultation.
  • Evaluate patient responses to care, anticipate changes in status, and modify the care plan in collaboration with the health care team.
  • Demonstrate understanding of physiologic and psychological effects of normal aging and provide age-specific care (neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric).
  • Collaborate, communicate, and coordinate with health care team members to plan and implement care.
  • Assess needs for hospitalization, initiate nursing admission database, and facilitate discharge planning with inpatient staff and physicians.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding psychosocial, cultural, and emotional needs.
  • Orient patients and families to nursing services, roles of health care team members, and access to services.
  • Identify patient educational needs, develop educational components for care plans, and provide teaching/counseling aligned with learning needs and medical plans.
  • Encourage patient compliance with therapeutic and medical regimens using scientific and behavioral knowledge.
  • Assess patient lifestyle risk factors and integrate health promotion and preventive care into ongoing assessments.
  • Promote patient self-care responsibility for meeting health needs.
  • Adhere to documentation, safety, infection control, and reporting standards.
  • Identify learning needs and participate in continuing education, staff orientation, and student education activities.
  • Collaborate in performance reviews, quality assurance activities, and professional development, including nursing research.
  • Maintain professional work habits and appearance consistent with Kaiser Permanente policies.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
  • Washington state Registered Nurse License (or Compact License) at hire.
  • Basic Life Support certification at hire.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 6 months of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) at hire.
  • Communication, problem-solving, leadership, and decision-making skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ambulatory care nursing experience.
  • Primary nursing or case-management experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Emergency department nursing experience.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) at hire.

Schedule

2-week rotation: Week 1: Friday, Saturday; Week 2: Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday.

Shift: Day, 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM.

Scheduled weekly hours: 30.

Pay

$44.34 - $80.99 per hour.
