About the role

As an Advanced Podiatrist (Team Leader) Band 7 at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, you will be part of a small team managing the Lower Limb Ischemic Management Service (LLIMS), expanding the current service to include patients with lower limb arterial disease and chronic limb threatening ischemia (CLTI).

Responsibilities

  • Dynamics triage of referrals from across NENC
  • Outpatient vascular assessment with Periflux 6000 and WIFI scoring
  • Inpatient Vascular Podiatry care for patients with foot ulceration, including surgical debridement
  • Knowledge and experience of advanced wound care techniques such as topical negative pressure and larvae therapy
  • Work towards an IRMER qualification to refer for radiological investigations
  • Part of a multidisciplinary team to manage complex foot ulceration, participating in weekly virtual Vascular/Foot MDT meetings
  • Support ongoing data collection and outcome measures for productivity and equitable access to the vascular department
  • Collaborate with colleagues from other disciplines to utilize evidence-based practices and develop standard operating procedures
  • Teach students, apprentices, and a range of qualified health care professionals
  • Communicate effectively across many disciplines and geographical boundaries as a key member of several diabetic foot MDT’s
  • Develop professionally through research and audit, leading on health and safety, risk management, and supervision and training programs
  • Manage the department efficiently within available resources
  • Deputize for Principal Podiatrists as required

Requirements

  • Registration with HCPC
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Podiatric Medicine
  • Postgraduate training/experience in specialist area working to MSc or equivalent level
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and post-registration training
  • Substantial experience working in the NHS at Specialist Podiatrist level and in area of specialism
  • Expertise and leadership in complex caseload management
  • Experience of working cohesively in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Self-motivation and organizational skills
  • Assessment and diagnosis of cases in a holistic way, including a multi-agency and patient-focused approach
  • Experience of managing a caseload of often elderly people with complex social and medical conditions
  • Foot health education and advice skills
  • Supervision and motivation of others

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Podiatry or Public Health
  • Advanced Certificate in the Diabetic Foot/Diabetic foot module
  • IRMER qualified to refer for x-ray
  • Certificate in independent prescribing to enable prescription of a limited range of medications such as antibiotics
  • Certificate in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) to participate in research

Skills

  • Excellent clinical skills including delicate scalpel work, joint and tissue structure assessment, manipulation, and diagnosis
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including assertiveness and ability to negotiate; ability to manage non-compliance/conflict
  • Carries out concurrent activities (multi-tasking) and works in an unpredictable working pattern
  • Reasoning and persuasion when communicating with patients, relatives, and carers
  • Good presentation skills
