About the role

Established in 1970, Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) is one of 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System, with seven locations across several counties, including Brunswick, Charlotte, Nottoway, Mecklenburg, Greensville, and Halifax. SVCC serves the largest community college region in the state, covering ten counties and one city. SVCC is located in a beautiful rural region renowned for its rolling hills, pine and hardwood forests, and farmland, and is home to two popular lakes: Gaston and Kerr. We offer a welcoming learning environment and are accredited to award associate degrees. The college offers a diverse range of programs, including developmental studies, academic, technical, and lifelong education. Responsibilities

  • Introduce and demonstrate concepts such as line, proportion, space, perspective, value, and composition.
  • Apply drawing concepts to subject matter including still life, landscape, and the figure.
  • Instruct students in the use of various media, such as pencil, charcoal, and ink wash.
  • Organize field trips and gallery assignments as appropriate to the curriculum.
  • Deliver instruction in a hybrid format, ensuring high-quality course materials align with college standards.
  • Maintain engagement through the college’s Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) for the online portion of the course.
  • Monitor and document class attendance in compliance with college policies, maintaining accurate records and communicating with students and necessary departments as needed to support academic success.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art
  • Clear demonstration of drawing skill adequate to teach this course
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal communication skills; ability to write syllabi and exams
  • Ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum, and assessments
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the community college and student success

Additional Considerations

  • Teaching experience at the college level, specifically with face-to-face and online/hybrid modalities
  • Competency using instructional technologies such as SMART boards, Zoom and Canvas Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Experience working with community college students
  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and academic success
