About the role

The Zero Waste Specialist position is based within the Solid Waste division of the Public Works Department and will report to the Circular Economy Administrator. The Zero Waste Specialist will support implementation of key initiatives to reach the City's waste diversion and zero waste goals while also collaborating with the Zero Waste Team and other various City departments. The position will work in the areas of zero waste research, waste prevention, recycling education, and has day-to-day administrative support tasks for projects. Positions in this class are assigned to specific specialties to be determined at time of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Zero waste education to City of Phoenix departments, residents, and public-private partners.
  • Maintenance and administrative assistance for the following programs: Green Business Leaders, Certified Green Organics, Master Recycler, School Food Waste Diversion Program, Phoenix City Hall Facilities Hazardous Waste Diversion Program, and City Facilities Food Waste Diversion Program.
  • Conducting research and assisting in planning and marketing efforts.
  • Assisting with assembling collateral material to market zero waste and zero waste initiatives.
  • Maintaining logs and records related to procurement of team equipment and supplies.
  • Inventory work, logging information received from telephone and email correspondence.
  • Compiling and drafting reports for a variety of constituents.
  • Handling inquiries from public officials, outside agencies, and businesses.
  • Data compilation of trainings, public speaking engagements, and presentations.
  • Coordinating activities and events with other city departments and outside agencies to ensure continued service to both residents and city employees.
  • Demonstrating superior customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and teamwork; analyzing operational processes.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of responsible clerical work experience which provides the ability to maintain a variety of financial and related records, perform basic mathematical computations, operate base radios/telephone equipment, order and dispense supplies and materials, and deal with the public.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.

Working more than forty hours in a work week to perform assigned job duties, including weekends, evenings, early morning hours, and holidays as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in public administration, business administration, sustainability, or a closely related field.
  • Experience with procurement software (SAP or similar) for the purposes of shopping, purchasing, and invoicing.
  • Drafting reports, memos, and briefings.
  • Developing marketing content.
  • Public speaking, conducting trainings, and presentations.
  • Community outreach and engagement, coordinating projects.
  • Implementing programs including recycling or other environmental programs within a public organization.
  • Microsoft Excel, Word, Publisher, and Outlook.
  • Providing high levels of customer service in person, over the phone, and via email.
  • Educating, planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating environmental programs related to sustainability, recycling, or zero waste.

Pay

Pay Range: $20.92 to $35.78 per hour.

Hiring Range: $20.92 to $29.44 per hour.

Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification. Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.
