Winter Site Manager (Antarctica)- Alternate

About the role

The position deploys to McMurdo Station, Antarctica for 7-8 months and serves as the senior site lead during the austral winter, if the Primary Winter Site Manager is unable to deploy. Deployment to Antarctica is required for this position, from approximately February through October (7-8 months).

Due To Contract Requirements, US Citizenship Is Required. Must obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to start date. This process could take up to 4 months.

Responsibilities

• Reports to the McMurdo Area Manager; may serve as Acting Area Manager as needed.
• Deploys to McMurdo Station, Antarctica for the Austral Winter season, approximately Feb. 15 to Oct. 10.
• Ensures the Annual Program Plan and other station activities are completed as planned, and that concerns and obstacles are communicated as needed.
• Available 24/7 while deployed to respond to station emergencies, personnel issues or other incidents.
• Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Emergency Manager for McMurdo, advising the EOC Director and ASC Emergency Manager during McMurdo emergencies; manages EOC assigned personnel and ensures training requirements are met.
• Ensures reporting responsibilities are met, including support of National Science Foundation (NSF) representatives, Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) management and subcontractor program managers.
• Works directly with Environmental Health and Safety department and Safety Manager to continuously improve safety culture, decrease frequency of injuries and property damage, and ensure a safe working environment for everyone.
• Ensures compliance with the Antarctic Treaty, the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty, the Antarctic Conservation Act, and other governing legislation.
• Identifies and manages risk and opportunities for McMurdo.
• Maintains oversight of project progress and resolves resource conflicts.
• Serves as lead ASC representative while deployed to McMurdo, in regards to ASC personnel, NSF representatives and other agencies.
• Supports supervisors, managers and SMEs in communicating with station and stakeholders from all agencies.
• Works with Leidos HR on personnel issues; oversees implementation of Leidos disciplinary action.
• Communicates effectively with the McMurdo Community to integrate and implement program changes and priorities.
• Facilitates ASC leadership meeting and other meetings to proactively discuss concerns, challenges, obstacles and resource conflicts.
• Remains informed and engaged with behavioral and other personnel issues, in order to resolve or address these issues consistently within ASC.
• Participates in the Community Incident process as needed and ensures that community resources and contacts (e.g., counselors, Victims’ Advocates, etc.) are readily available to all members of the community.
• Participates in Performance Management Teams and creation of Area Excellence Plans, Deep Dives, and other reports for ASC and NSF leadership.
• Oversees alcohol policy on station, in conjunction with Station Services leadership.
• Handles confidential matters in accordance with management policy.
• Supports an inclusive and harassment-free workplace for all personnel on station while upholding Leidos values.
• Works with Recreation Coordinator to support a range of after-hours activities and events and with Morale Integration Manager as needed on longer term strategies.
• Performs other duties as assigned to support ASC and USAP operations, filling in gaps and ensuring the overall success of McMurdo Station as needed.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a related discipline, and 10+ years of professional experience. Additional experience in lieu of degree will be considered.
• Leadership experience must include the demonstrated ability to work with and independently manage a diverse, skilled work force.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully manage conflict resolution and problem solve operational & logistics issues is required.
• You May Also Have Experience managing remote work/live communities.
• Experience working in matrixed organization with multiple sub-contractors.
• Polar experience is desirable.
• Leadership experience at remote locations.
