Orion is seeking an experienced Welder to support our field construction operations throughout Southern Louisiana. Our Welders play an important role in the construction and repair of marine and heavy civil infrastructure, performing hands-on welding and fabrication work in support of pile driving, marine foundations, docks, wharves, ports, terminals, bridges, and other waterfront construction. This position works alongside Pile Drivers, Carpenters, Crane and Equipment Operators, Laborers, and field leadership in active marine construction environments. About the role

This position is accountable for providing yard maintenance support to Orion. Incumbents are responsible for welding, cutting, grinding, chipping, and clean-up in the projects with which they are involved. The role involves working closely with the Welding Shop Foreman, Yard Superintendent, Dredge Captains, Deck Captains, Welders, Helpers, and other skilled crafts persons. The incumbent must support Orion’s guiding beliefs and core values centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, all built upon the foundation of Integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Works as assigned by the Welding Shop Foreman to ensure the successful completion of ongoing or new marine yard support projects.
  • Gathers information on the scope of work and obtains the necessary permits prior to beginning welding projects.
  • Cuts, welds, chips, and grinds metal as required by the project.
  • Utilizes oxygen-acetylene cutting torches and related equipment to cut away metal from existing structures.
  • Welds together pieces of sheet metal once individual sheet piles are pile-driven into place.
  • Applies stick rod welding in all positions to complete jobs.
  • Rigs cable for lifting and moving objects from one location to another.
  • Handles the placement of steel plates and sheet piles using cranes, winches, cables, and hand tools.
  • Operates saws, presses, drills, and grinders to fabricate parts needed for equipment repair.
  • Inspects and makes minor repairs to welding equipment; notifies Foreman of parts needed.
  • Picks up needed materials and supplies to complete projects.
  • Works closely with the Welding Shop Foreman, Yard Superintendent, Dredge Captains, Deck Captains, Welders, Helpers, and other skilled crafts persons to complete projects safely and efficiently.
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives to comply with State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
  • Performs other related administrative and technical duties as assigned, such as certification training, safety training, and procedure review.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all proprietary or trade secret information.

Requirements

  • A minimum of two (2) years of welding experience or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Good knowledge of welding trade practices and materials, physical characteristics of metals used in marine construction, and operation of marine equipment.
  • Proficiency in stick rod welding in all positions, acetylene and arc welding equipment, hand and power tools, and reading welding blueprints and sketches.
  • Effective verbal communication skills and ability to keep simple records of time and materials used.
  • Must pass standard welding tests demonstrating job proficiency.

Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, and personal flotation devices.
  • Qualified and physically able to drive regular passenger vehicles to visit work locations and job sites.
  • Capable of wearing welding face shields, personal flotation devices, and self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, squat, climb, or sit for long periods.
  • Perform repetitive movements involving feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, and back.
  • Climb vertical ladders to heights of 40'-50'.
  • Work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
  • Lift objects up to 50 lbs. alone.
  • Adapt to extreme temperature changes and prolonged outdoor exposure.
  • Work 9-12-hour days.
  • Remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately.
  • Capable of evacuating the work area quickly in an emergency.
