About the role

An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the supervising veterinarian
  • Gather patient histories
  • Perform physical exams
  • Create treatment plans
  • Diagnose and perform diagnostics
  • Provide dental services
  • Assist or perform surgical procedures
  • Manage medical care for patients
  • Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients

Requirements

Students must be enrolled in a veterinary school and in the clinical portion of their education. Veterinary students are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.

Qualifications

Skills

Strong communication skills, ability to work independently, and a passion for animal health are essential.

Schedule

Most externship experiences at South Suburban Animal Hospital range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules.
