Veterinary Extern - General Practice
About the role
An externship experience at White Oaks West Animal Hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Students will work closely with the supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians
- Gather patient histories
- Perform physical exams
- Create treatment plans
- Perform diagnostics
- Provide dental services
- Assist or perform surgical procedures
- Manage medical cases
- Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients
Requirements
Veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships. Students must be enrolled in a veterinary program and have completed the prerequisite coursework.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a veterinary program
- Completed prerequisite coursework
- Passing GPA requirement (if applicable)
Skills
- Strong communication skills
- Attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Basic knowledge of animal anatomy and physiology
Benefits
Students who complete the externship at White Oaks West Animal Hospital will receive a travel/living expense stipend of $1,500. This stipend is available to veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education.
Pay
The pay for this externship is commensurate with experience.
Schedule
The most externship experiences at White Oaks West Animal Hospital range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules.
