Veterinary Assistant - Emergency
About the role
BluePearl Pet Hospital in Downtown Manhattan is seeking a knowledgeable and skilled Veterinary Assistant to join our Emergency team.
Schedule
Daytime, Mon -- Wed, 7am -- 7pm
Pay
$22.50 - $32.80 / hour + competitive shift differentials. This pay band is dependent on experience and advancement through our competency assessment tool.
- Shift Differentials are based on a 4-hour minimum.
- Mon – Fri: 6pm to 8am = +$4.50/hr.
- Sat & Sun: 8am to 6pm = +$4.50/hr.
- Sat & Sun: 6pm to 8am = +$8.00/hr.
Responsibilities
- Triage emergency cases as they come in and assist DVM with crafting and going over estimates as needed.
- Perform diagnostics (radiographs, labwork, etc).
- Set up and discharge patients.
- Handle client communication.
- Stock, clean and maintain cleanliness in our ER, ICU and other designated areas for the role.
- Understand classification of commonly used medications, associated side effects and appropriately monitor therapeutic response.
- Administer medications via appropriate routes and duration under the guidance of an LVT.
- Perform radiography and lab work.
- Perform physical exams; accurately count heart, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate and effort.
- Engage with clients by performing triages, going over estimates and providing discharge instructions.
- Remain current on R.E.C.O.V.E.R CPR guidelines and demonstrate proficiency in designated role as assigned by attending clinician and/or supervisor.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current VTNE certification.
- Experience in veterinary medicine preferred.
- Knowledge of animal anatomy and physiology.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Basic computer skills.
