About the Role

The Utility Person is responsible for essential and secondary functions in a manufacturing environment, primarily focused on packaging operations. Essential functions consume the majority of working time daily.

Responsibilities

  • Bring unassembled cartons from the staging area to the taping station for assigned lines.
  • Assemble and tape cartons according to packing instructions for items on assigned lines, producing only enough for the shift plus 20% for the next shift.
  • Place preassembled empty cartons (with unopened liners) on each line for easy access by Packer-Trimmer-Inspectors, keeping them neat and orderly.
  • Close and tape (or bundle) full boxes promptly after packing, ensuring liners are properly folded or tied to prevent dust contamination.
  • Mark cartons neatly with the correct carton number and any special coding information.
  • Track and record the number of cartons produced per line on a check-off sheet and report totals to the Packaging Supervisor at the end of the shift.
  • Place finished cartons on pallets or slip sheets as instructed, stacking them in order of production with labels facing out and in straight, neat rows.
  • Apply correct banding or stretch wrap to stacked cartons per shipping specifications.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in assigned work areas, reporting any issues to the Packaging Supervisor.
  • Operate forklift trucks only if authorized and licensed, adhering to proper safety codes.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, wear PPE properly, and keep workstations clean and free of debris.
  • Work assigned shifts, including overtime and after-hours meetings as needed.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Grinder/Acting Grinder Duties

  • Clean all line equipment, unjam grinders, and assist in cleanup and grinding of excess materials.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Provide breaks to Packer-Trimmer-Inspectors as required.

Food Safety Responsibilities

  • Monitor and verify activities to ensure products meet food safety and quality standards.
  • Comply with all company food safety and quality assurance procedures, documenting data accurately.
  • Ensure all work product contact surfaces are sanitized after job completion.
  • Report any product or process failures that could impact food safety to Quality and/or Line/Maintenance Supervision.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • 1-2 years of related experience and/or training preferred.
  • Experience in plastics or packaging industry is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of computer operating systems.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently lifts and carries up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires close vision and the ability to sit, stand, walk, use hands, talk, hear, reach, stoop, bend, twist, push, pull, and move materials.
  • Regularly works on concrete surfaces.

Work Environment

  • Typical manufacturing environment with moderate to high noise levels; ear protection is required.
