Utility Line Technician I/Sewer
About the role
The Water Resources Department is seeking a Utility Line Technician to repair and maintain water and sanitary sewer and storm sewer lines. Normal starting pay for Utility Line Technician I is $20.00 per hour. Pay is negotiable based on qualifications and experience. The City of Lynchburg offers competitive benefits.
Responsibilities
- Performs manual labor associated with the repair and maintenance of water and sewer lines
- Operates jack hammers, tampers, saws, and other handheld tools both mechanical and manual
- Performs repair and maintenance on small equipment
- Operates CDL equipment such as dump trucks, dump truck trailer, CCTV truck units and combination jetting vacuum (jet-vac) trucks
- Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes, one ton dump trucks, combination jetting vacuum (jet-vac) trucks, and other medium and light duty vehicles as necessary
- Maintains time, material and work order records
- Performs assigned duties in response to emergencies such as utility related emergencies, and weather-related emergencies - snow removal, and flooding
- Works various schedules as assigned
- Performs duties to demonstrate ability to move to Utility Line Technician II
Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record according to City's criteria
- Ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License Class A within 90 days of employment
- Ability to obtain certifications necessary for specific work unit, such as flagger certificate, basic first aid and CPR certification
- Relevant background checks must be completed and approved
- Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment
- Certification in NASSCO Pipeline Assessment Certification Program, or PACP, preferred
- Experience operating heavy equipment preferred
- Experience with ArcMap or other GIS software preferred

Schedule
This position requires you to be on standby for seven consecutive days, evenings and weekends every 5 weeks. Standby employees must be available within one hour from being called. Can you work this schedule?
Essential Duties
Essential duties include repair and maintenance of water, sewer and stormwater lines working in ditches up to 18 feet deep. Can you safely perform this duty?
