Utility Line Technician

About the role

This position performs skilled work in the installation, repair and maintenance of water and sewer lines. Extended hours are often required for emergency response, to include nights, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, repair and replace utility lines and accessories
• Perform water and sewer taps and service connections
• Install water meters
• Flush sewer lines and manholes
• Locate water and sewer lines
• Install, test and repair water meters and fire hydrants
• Perform routine bacterial and CL2 tests; add necessary chemicals to sewer lines
• Perform minor landscaping on property following completion of work
• Operate trucks, tractors, back-hoes and mechanical equipment in connection with above tasks
• Assist in snow and ice removal

Requirements

• Education: High School Diploma or GED
• Experience: One (1) year of general work experience required; water and sewer line work experience preferred
• Valid Drivers License CDL Class B with tanker and air brake endorsement required at time of hire or within six (6) months of employment
• Flagging certification required within six (6) months of employment

Qualifications

• Knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer lines
• General knowledge of hand and power tools
• Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing
• Ability to prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner
• Possess organization and multi-tasking skills
• Ability to follow directions
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, coworkers, and other departments
• Ability to work for extended periods of time, often under unfavorable conditions

Physical Demands

• Heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
• Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions
• Subject to outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus
• Vocal communication is required for exchanging ideas and receiving orders; hearing to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
• Visual acuity is required for operation of machinery and motor vehicles and to determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work
