Anticipated hiring range: $58,395. This position is based in Raleigh, NC and is eligible for flexible hours and a hybrid work environment, with a majority of onsite work required.

About The Department

The NC State University Libraries supports and enables research and learning by providing collections, services, spaces, and technologies for the NC State community and its partners. The Libraries’ Strategic Plan describes our mission and goals, which are aligned with those of the university. The library system consists of the D. H. Hill Jr. Library, the James B. Hunt Jr. Library, and branch libraries for design, natural resources, and veterinary medicine.

The Learning Spaces & Services (LSS) department, part of the Student Success division, provides dynamic services, spaces, and technologies to enable all forms of learning, discovery, and research. The department leads programs and initiatives supporting student learning, access to essential tools, and undergraduate student success. Through workshops and activities, students and faculty can explore tools for advanced visualization, making, 3D modeling, virtual environments, and digital media creation. LSS manages the Technology Lending Service and oversees learning spaces including the Makerspace, Virtual Reality Studio, Learning Commons, iPearl Innovation Studio, VR & Gaming Studio, and Digital Media Studios.

Responsibilities

  • Digital Media Lab Management:
    • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Digital Media Lab, ensuring a safe, organized, and welcoming environment for creativity and learning.
    • Manage maintenance, organization, and accessibility of digital media software and hardware to ensure functionality and up-to-date resources.
    • Develop and implement policies to enhance user experience, grow awareness and usage, and ensure optimal functioning of the space.
    • Coordinate the Studios technology lending program, including adding and removing items, creating kits, and supporting documentation.
  • Student Supervision and Mentorship:
    • Recruit, oversee, and guide student assistants, ensuring they receive training to provide outstanding assistance and advice in the Digital Media Lab.
    • Create a collaborative team environment emphasizing skill development, customer service, and a passion for media making and learning.
  • Digital Media Support:
    • Maintain a strong understanding of digital media technologies, including audio (e.g., podcasting, music recording, editing, production), video (e.g., videography, editing, publishing), photography (e.g., adjusting settings, editing, digitizing), or graphic design (e.g., illustration, digital painting, desktop publishing).
    • Support digital media technologies for users, including audio, video, and graphic design tools.
    • Provide expert guidance and hands-on demonstrations through consultations, workshops, and training sessions.
    • Support NC State campus community events like Make-A-Thon and State of the Sciences.
    • Stay abreast of the latest trends and technologies in digital media and educational fields, integrating them into the Digital Media Lab.
  • Ask Us Management:
    • Staff the main service point in the Hill and Hunt Libraries during the evening shift; provide customer service and troubleshoot problems in a high-volume, high-technology research library.
    • Communicate the tools and services of the Studios internally and externally to ensure broad awareness.

Work schedule: Monday - Friday 12 PM - 9 PM, with flexibility required including occasional weekend shifts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in a library or in archives or records management; or
  • High School diploma or equivalency and five years of experience in a library or in archives or records management; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

    • Significant and relevant experience providing public/customer service.
    • Ability to foster an environment of belonging and well-being.
    • Experience hiring, training, and supervising a team of student or temporary employees.
    • Familiarity with digital media technologies including audio (e.g., podcasting, music recording, editing, production), video (e.g., videography, editing, publishing), or graphic design (e.g., illustration, digital painting, desktop publishing).
    • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, including establishing and maintaining effective work relationships and communicating clearly with colleagues and patrons.
