About the Role

The Information Technology (IT) Tutor works directly with students, either one-on-one or in small group sessions, aiming to foster independent learning and help students achieve their academic goals.

Topics covered include:

  • C family programming languages (Java, C++, Perl)
  • Basic programming algorithm structures
  • Data types, syntax, and program development
  • Execution of Microsoft and major platforms
  • Programming Logic
  • Computer Applications
  • Quality Assurance
  • Web Programming
  • Software Testing

Responsibilities

  • Provides one-on-one and small group tutoring support
  • Offers subject-specific content strategies, attuned to different learning styles and preferences, to help students understand key concepts learned in class
  • Provides direct assistance in the use of equipment and learning materials needed for student success
  • Conducts “class visits” and assists with publicizing the College’s tutoring services
  • Assists with the maintenance of accurate records in accordance with stated deadlines
  • Completes all necessary paperwork accurately and according to stated deadlines
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of departmental instructional materials
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Education consistent with department needs and minimum of associate’s degree in a related field of study
  • Demonstrated knowledge and competence in the subject matter
  • Ability to explain concepts to others effectively
  • Ability to multitask with varying levels of students and subject material
  • Ability to communicate with faculty regarding expectations of students, assignments, attendance at tutoring sessions, and work completed
  • Ability to effectively communicate study strategies to ensure academic success
  • Ability to work comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Patience and positive attitude in establishing an encouraging learning environment
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Working knowledge of administrative and scheduling concepts, practices, and procedures

  • Sensitivity to appropriately respond to the needs of the community

Physical Demands / Working Conditions

The work is performed in a normal, professional office environment. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the duties of the job and will perform repetitive motions with hands/fingers using a computer mouse and keyboard to type. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, files, pamphlets, books, etc. Work may also require walking and standing in conjunction with travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the worksite.

Pay

$18.03 per hour
