About the role

American Traveler is seeking a Respiratory Therapist for a Level 4 NICU position at a children's hospital, requiring RRT certification and prior NICU/PICU experience. The role involves working in the NICU and Pediatric Critical Care unit with a Level 4 NICU patient population.

Schedule

• Day shift, 4×12-hour shifts (07:00–19:00)
• 48 hours per week (36 hours also available)
• Every other weekend required
• Every other holiday required; must work 2 of 3 winter holidays
• Self-scheduling model used (desired schedules not guaranteed)
• Must float within scope of practice as needed

Responsibilities

• Provide respiratory care to neonatal and pediatric critical care patients
• Participate in high-risk deliveries and neonatal transports as needed
• Assist with intubation, extubation, and tracheostomy care/management
• Care for patients with conditions such as ARDS, cystic fibrosis, BPD, and respiratory distress syndrome

Requirements

• Minimum 1 year of NICU and PICU experience
• Level 4 NICU experience
• Required certifications: RRT, BLS, NRP
• VA state license required (or applicable state license)
• Epic experience required for SRO Float Pool and Inpatient Units
• Ability to interpret Arterial Blood Gases (ABGs)

Preferred Qualifications

• PICU Cardiac experience
• Teaching hospital experience
• BSN degree
• PALS and ACCS certifications

Skills

• Skilled in neonatal/pediatric respiratory equipment including CPAP, oscillating ventilators, and high-frequency jet ventilators
• Experience with medication delivery systems and airway management/suctioning

Pay

Pay package based on 12-hour shifts and 48.0 hours per week (subject to confirmation) with tax-free stipend amount to be determined.

Assignment Details

• Start date: November 9, 2026
• Duration: 52 weeks
• First-time travelers may be considered
• External travelers cannot exceed 365 total assignment days with the facility
• Previous UVA permanent staff or internal/external travelers require 1-year separation and leadership approval before returning
• Maximum of 40 hours RTO allowed per 13-week contract; must be disclosed prior to submission
• Any pre-start vacation time must be disclosed in advance
• No radius restriction for this unit
