Join the Agency of Transportation as a Transportation Operations Technician I and perform a variety of highway maintenance tasks, including repairing guardrails, cutting trees and brush, patching roads, picking litter, and ditching. During winter months, assist with plowing, salting, and other snow-removal duties; overtime may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain guardrails, signs, and other roadside infrastructure
  • Cut trees and brush along highways
  • Patch potholes and perform other road-surface repairs
  • Collect litter and maintain drainage ditches
  • Plow, salt, and sand roads during winter storms; overtime required
  • Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment
  • Lift and move materials commonly used in maintenance work
  • Respond to emergencies such as floods, ice storms, and hazardous-material spills

Environmental Factors

  • Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions year-round
  • Exposure to heavy equipment, hazardous materials, roadside litter, blood, and airborne pathogens
  • Traffic hazards while performing roadside duties
  • Random drug and alcohol testing required before operating vehicles or equipment
  • Must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation
  • Must be reachable by phone and able to report to work outside normal schedule during emergencies

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) must be obtained for successful completion of original probation
  • Must complete all Vermont Traffic Control (VTTC) required coursework within six months or be enrolled

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
