About the role
The Agency of Transportation seeks a Transportation Operations Technician I. This position involves tasks such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees/brush, patching roads, picking litter, and ditching. During the winter, responsibilities include plowing and salting roads, with potential for overtime.
Responsibilities
- Repairing guardrails, cutting trees/brush, and patching roads.
- Picking up litter and performing other maintenance tasks.
- Assisting with plowing and salting roads during winter months.
- Overtime work is required, especially during winter months.
Requirements
- No education or experience required.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Valid driver’s license is required.
- Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for the successful completion of original probation.
- Completion of all VTTC required coursework within six (6) months or be enrolled.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Ability to work in extreme outdoor weather conditions.
- Must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation.
Skills
- Proficiency in using tools and equipment commonly used for maintenance work.
- Ability to lift materials commonly used in maintenance work.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Pay
- As of July 12, 2026, the step 1 rate for pay grade 18 is $21.41 per hour, and the step 15 rate is $33.11 per hour.
Schedule
- Overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment.
