Transportation Operations Technician I

This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, including repairing guardrails, cutting trees/brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and more. In the winter months, the role assists with plowing, salting, and may require overtime. Entry-level opportunities include excellent benefits, career development, and a CDL training program. A sign-on and retention bonus of up to $2000 is available for eligible new hires.

Responsibilities

  • Repair guardrails and perform roadside maintenance
  • Cut trees and brush along highways
  • Patch roads and perform general road repairs
  • Pick up litter and maintain roadside cleanliness
  • Perform ditching and drainage maintenance
  • Assist with snow plowing and salting during winter months (overtime may be required)
  • Operate tools and equipment commonly used for maintenance work
  • Lift materials commonly used in maintenance work
  • Work near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and roadside traffic

Environmental Factors

  • Work in extreme outdoor weather conditions
  • Potential exposure to blood and airborne pathogens
  • Hazards from traffic, emergencies (flood, ice, snow), and hazardous materials
  • Required to report to work outside of normal schedule and be reachable by phone
  • Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program prior to operating vehicles or equipment
  • Considerable overtime work, particularly during winter months, is a condition of employment

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required for successful completion of original probation
  • Must complete all VTTC required coursework within six months or be enrolled

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
