Join the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) as a Transportation Materials Technician 3 in the Material Evaluation and Specification Unit (MESU) at the Materials Testing Laboratory in Rocky Hill, CT.

About the role

In this role, you will perform inspection and testing of materials and structures used in the construction of transportation facilities. You will act as a quality assurance inspector for precast and prestressed concrete structures, assist higher-level employees with maintaining inspection records and databases, and determine whether components conform with applicable specifications. You will also serve as a liaison between MESU and District inspection staff, examine approved shop drawings and documentation, and review concrete batch records for conformance with approved mix designs.

Responsibilities

• Act as quality assurance inspector for precast and prestressed concrete structures.
• Assist higher-level employees with maintaining inspection records, databases, and software platforms.
• Determine whether precast and prestressed components conform with applicable specifications.
• Serve as liaison between MESU and District inspection staff regarding laboratory policies, procedures, and material-related problems.
• Examine approved shop drawings and other documentation needed for precast and prestressed concrete quality assurance inspection.
• Examine concrete batch records and mixture documentation for conformance with approved mix design information.
• Perform related duties as assigned, including:
  • Distribute, prioritize, oversee, and review work of field or central laboratory staff.
  • Provide staff training and assistance.
  • Conduct or assist in conducting performance evaluations.
  • Prepare recommendations regarding suitability of materials used in construction or maintenance of transportation systems.
  • Establish and maintain procedures for assurance sampling and material inspections and testing.
  • Assist in directing research on new materials or modifications of existing materials.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence of tests and analyses, including graphs.
  • Witness welder certification tests.
  • Assist in the purchasing of instrumentation.

Requirements

To qualify, you must meet the following minimum requirements by the job closing date:

• Six (6) years of experience in the chemical and/or physical analysis of transportation construction or maintenance materials, including independent performance of tests such as extraction gradation, slump and air content for cement, and concrete cylinder tests.
• College training in natural sciences, construction technology, civil engineering, or related fields may substitute for experience at a rate of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience, up to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Qualifications

• ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician—Grade I Certification or equivalent and/or PCI Level 1 Certification or equivalent.
• Experience with Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel, and other Microsoft Office applications, including creating spreadsheets, inputting data, and generating graphs.
• Experience performing mathematical computations and preparing material testing and inspection reports.
• Experience reviewing precast producer documents such as quality control plans, concrete batch tickets, shop drawings, and test reports.
• Experience with the review of material certificates, manufacturer self-certifications, and certified test results, and application of the Buy America, Build America Act (BABAA) requirements.
• Experience communicating verbally and in writing with teammates and stakeholders at all levels.
• Experience with hydraulic cement concrete components, mix properties, and aggregates production and testing.
• Experience with standards for testing or inspection of construction materials or components typically used in transportation-related applications (e.g., ASTM International, AASHTO).
• Experience reading plans and shop drawings.

Skills

• Considerable knowledge of physical and/or chemical properties, specifications, and uses of construction materials.
• Familiarity with principles and practices prescribed by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and federal government standards for testing transportation construction and maintenance materials.
• Strong skills in performing calculations, interpersonal communication, and written communication.
• Ability to perform chemical and/or physical tests and analyses, calibrate equipment, standardize reagents, and utilize computer software.

Schedule

Full-time (40 hours per week), first shift, Monday through Friday.
