About the role

In this role, you will assist the Transportation Materials Technician 3 within the Material Evaluation and Specification Unit (MESU), specifically in the asphalt mixture area. Your responsibilities will include the inspection and testing of materials and structures used in the construction of transportation facilities, with a focus on asphalt mixtures and their components.

This posting may be used to fill other Transportation Materials Technician 2 positions as needed. Additional related roles and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the Unit and section in the Materials Testing Laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Perform advanced chemical and/or physical tests and analyses of materials such as paints, asphalts, petroleum, concrete, plastic products, expansion joints, cable fittings, rope, fuel oil, grease, varnish, bituminous mixtures, guide rail posts, sand, stone, steel, cement, seeds, soils, fertilizers, and herbicides.
• Inspect manufacturing procedures, equipment, and final products at sources of supply including quarries, steel fabrication plants, concrete pipe plants, and bituminous and prestressed concrete plants.
• Calibrate and maintain testing machines and laboratory apparatus and equipment; standardize solutions and reagents.
• Determine whether materials conform with state, federal, and project specifications; review shop drawings.
• Perform calculations and maintain records of observations and test results.
• Assist in researching new materials or modifications of existing materials; discuss problems, changes, and new procedures with producers.
• Prepare reports and graphs of completed tests.

Requirements

• Four (4) years of experience in chemical and/or physical testing, analysis, or inspection of construction or maintenance materials, including independent performance of tests such as extraction gradation, slump and air content for cement, and concrete cylinder tests.
• College training in natural sciences, construction technology, civil engineering, or related fields may substitute for experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience, up to a maximum of two (2) years for an Associate's degree.
• For state employees, one (1) year of experience in materials testing at the level of a Transportation Technician may substitute for the General Experience.
• Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license may be required.
• Must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity to perform duties; a physical examination may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Asphalt Plant Technician Certification from the Northeast Transportation Training and Certification Program (NETTCP).
• Experience with Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel (creating spreadsheets, inputting data, making calculations, and creating graphs), and other Microsoft Office applications.
• Experience performing mathematical computations and preparing material testing and inspection reports.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with teammates and stakeholders at all levels.
• Experience with construction project management software applications, such as AASHTOWare Construction and Materials, or similar applications.
• Experience with asphalt mixtures, their component properties, and all aspects of production, placement, and testing.
• Experience maintaining, verifying, and checking testing equipment in accordance with AASHTO standards.
• Experience reviewing asphalt mixture conformance with applicable specifications.

Skills

• Knowledge of principles and practices of physical and/or chemical testing of construction materials, research methods, manufacturing procedures, and properties of construction materials.
• Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Ability to perform materials tests, calibrate and maintain testing equipment, standardize reagents, utilize computer software, and perform mathematical calculations.

Pay

Salary is determined in accordance with contractual language, reemployment, SEBAC, transfer, promotion, and merit employment rules for state employees.

Schedule

Full-Time (40 hours per week), First Shift, Monday - Friday.
