Transportation Maintenance Specialist 1 (Multiple Vacancies)

About the role

We are looking to hire hard-working, enthusiastic individuals to fill five (5) full-time Transportation Maintenance Specialist 1 vacancies in the County's Transportation Maintenance Division. This is an entry-level opportunity to learn a trade with all necessary on-the-job training provided. The Transportation Maintenance program is responsible for maintenance of road surfaces, shoulders and ditches, culvert and storm water drainage, bridge maintenance, ferry maintenance, striping, sign work, and road patching for roughly 1,400 miles of county roads.

If selected, you will perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks to assist in the safe and efficient operation of road, bridge, traffic markings and signs, maintenance and repair equipment, and ferry operation. This role typically works as part of a team, requiring strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.

The Transportation Maintenance Specialist 1 is part of a promotional career path. Incumbents may be promoted to higher Transportation Maintenance Specialist series classifications upon completion of the approved training and development plan, allowing promotion up to a Transportation Maintenance Specialist 4 through higher-level training and internal opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks to assist in road, bridge, traffic markings, signs, maintenance, and repair equipment operations.
• Work as part of a team in varying outdoor weather conditions.
• Assist in the maintenance of road surfaces, shoulders, ditches, culverts, storm water drainage, bridges, ferries, striping, and sign work.
• Operate hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.
• Respond to after-hours emergencies such as road closures as needed.
• Perform duties in highly congested traffic areas and adverse weather conditions.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
• Experience using hand tools (e.g., chain saw) and/or power tools.
• Must be willing to work Monday-Thursday from 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM.
• Must be willing to work in all-weather conditions, including heat, rain, or other season-appropriate weather.
• Must pass a post-offer, non-DOT, pre-employment drug test.
• Must pass a post-offer physical assessment; accommodation requests will be reviewed on an individual basis.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Traffic control experience.
• ODOT Traffic Flagging Certification.
• Experience in road construction or road work, including knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safe operation of equipment.
• Experience as a seasonal worker in public works, utilities, or construction industry.
• Experience as a Seasonal Road Maintenance Assistant with Clackamas County.

Working Conditions

• Duties require frequent to continuous standing, walking, squatting, kneeling, bending, twisting, balancing, digging, climbing, overhead reaching, and repetitive grasping and fine motor manipulation.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds and push/pull 100 pounds.
• Exposure to loud noises, vibration, slippery and/or uneven surfaces, dust, fumes from exhaust, paint and welding, hot oil, asphalt, chemicals, working at heights, traffic and electrical hazards, and adverse weather conditions.
• All work is performed outdoors, sometimes in highly congested traffic areas.
• Considered weather essential employees and required to report to work to support critical County operations during emergencies, disasters, or adverse weather conditions.

Schedule

This position follows the County’s alternate workweek program, working 40 hours from Monday through Thursday (Fridays off), typically from 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM. This position is designated as on-site/in-person.

Pay

Annual Pay Range: $52,035.77 - $65,337.29

Hourly Pay Range: $25.017197 - $31.412158

Salary offers will be made within the posted pay range and will be based on candidate's relevant experience (paid or unpaid).
